Arsenal are facing a critical moment in their quest for Champions League glory after suffering a 1-0 loss to Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) at home. The Gunners will travel to Paris for the second leg, needing to overturn the deficit and secure a spot in the final. One major decision on Mikel Arteta’s mind is whether he should start teenage sensation Ethan Nwaneri ahead of Gabriel Martinelli. This move could be key to Arsenal's chances of advancing.

Arsenal's Struggle Against PSG in the First Leg

The first leg at the Emirates was a tense affair, with PSG getting off to a blistering start. Ousmane Dembélé's early goal put the French champions ahead, and despite a few close calls, Arsenal struggled to find the equalizer. Gianluigi Donnarumma proved to be a formidable obstacle in goal, and even though Mikel Merino had a goal disallowed, Arsenal’s efforts fell short.

However, former Real Madrid and AC Milan midfielder Clarence Seedorf observed that Arsenal’s defeat wasn’t just about tactical mistakes or missed chances—it was also a psychological issue. The Gunners, according to Seedorf, appeared to play with a sense of fear, unable to match the fearless intensity of their opponents.

Should Arteta Start Nwaneri Against PSG?

With the second leg fast approaching, former West Ham and Aston Villa player Nigel Reo-Coker has suggested a bold change to Arteta’s lineup. He believes that Ethan Nwaneri, the 17-year-old sensation, should be given the nod to start in place of Gabriel Martinelli.

“In these types of games, you want players who are fearless, players who won’t let the pressure get to them. Ethan Nwaneri fits that mold perfectly. I’d drop Martinelli and start him against PSG.” — Nigel Reo-Coker

Reo-Coker argues that Nwaneri’s fearless nature could provide Arsenal with the spark they need to break down PSG’s defense. While Martinelli has been a key player for Arsenal, especially in the Premier League, the young Nwaneri could bring a fresh and fearless energy to the attack—something that might be missing in a high-pressure situation like this.

The Case for Nwaneri’s Inclusion

While the suggestion to start Nwaneri over Martinelli might seem radical, it’s not as far-fetched as it seems. Nwaneri has shown exceptional promise in his appearances for Arsenal this season. Despite his age, he has demonstrated maturity and composure that belies his years. The Champions League semi-final could be the perfect stage for him to showcase his talent.

“I’ve never believed that age should hold a player back. If you’re good enough, you’re old enough. Nwaneri could thrive in a game like this.” — Nigel Reo-Coker

In modern football, players often interchange positions, making it easier for younger talents to adjust to different roles. Nwaneri could slot into various attacking positions, offering flexibility that could confuse PSG’s defense and give Arteta tactical advantages.

The Psychological Factor: Will Nwaneri's Fearlessness Help?

Reo-Coker’s suggestion hinges on a simple but crucial factor—fearlessness. Against a team like PSG, who are well-organized and clinical, Arsenal will need to shed any sense of hesitation. Nwaneri's youthful energy and confidence could be a game-changer, particularly in a fixture where Arsenal needs to take risks and push for goals.

Arteta himself has hinted that the margin of defeat in the first leg was small, which suggests that Arsenal’s performance was not far from being enough. However, for the second leg in Paris, Arteta will need to find a way to break PSG’s defensive structure, and perhaps Nwaneri’s boldness could provide the spark that Arsenal needs.

What About Martinelli?

Despite Reo-Coker's recommendation to drop Martinelli, Arteta has not shown signs that he’s ready to make such a drastic change. Martinelli’s work ethic and contribution to the team this season have been invaluable, and his pace and creativity could still prove crucial in the second leg.

That said, with the tactical demands of the Champions League, Arteta might decide that a change is necessary. Whether or not Nwaneri starts, it's clear that Arsenal’s attack needs to find a way to click in Paris if they are to have any hope of turning the tie around.

Stat Arsenal PSG
Shots (1st Leg) 13 9
Possession 58% 42%
Pass Accuracy 89% 85%
Key Passes (1st Leg) 6 5
  • Arsenal’s key challenge: Breaking down PSG’s defense despite a strong attacking performance in the first leg.
  • PSG’s advantage: A crucial away goal by Dembélé in the first leg, putting Arsenal on the back foot.

What Does Arteta Think?

“While it was a difficult game, we are not far from what we need to improve on. The key will be how we approach the second leg with the right mentality.” — Mikel Arteta

PSG is good, but Arsenal had some chances, so did they. I think overal well deserved from PSG. Martinelli shouldn't be dropped, I don't think Nwaneri is better than him atm.
