Chelsea 2-0 Luton: Danny Welbeck scores on debut as Blues book Leeds clash

Chelsea secured their place in the third round of the Carabao Cup with a 2-0 victory over Luton Town at Stamford Bridge, as Danny Welbeck marked his debut with a goal.

Xabi Alonso’s side dominated possession and territory throughout the contest but were initially frustrated by a Luton team determined to defend deep.

Welbeck eventually broke the resistance shortly after half-time before Chelsea forced a second goal late on to make it back-to-back victories under Alonso.

Chelsea controlled proceedings from the opening stages but struggled to turn their dominance into clear opportunities.

Luton packed players behind the ball and repeatedly frustrated the hosts, who often attempted to play their way through a crowded defensive structure.

Morgan Rogers came closest during the first half when an excellent Chelsea move ended with his effort striking the post.

The breakthrough finally arrived in the 50th minute.

Malo Gusto delivered an inviting cross into the penalty area and Welbeck rose to meet it, directing his header beyond the goalkeeper to score on his first Chelsea appearance.

Having previously scored at Stamford Bridge while representing other clubs, the experienced striker was finally able to celebrate a goal in Chelsea colours.

Welbeck’s opener did little to change Luton's approach, with the visitors continuing to sit deep and attempting to remain within touching distance heading into the closing stages.

Chelsea eventually found their second after Valentín Barco won possession in midfield.

Cole Palmer quickly moved the ball onto Estêvão, who beat his marker one-on-one before sending the ball across goal and forcing an own goal at the far post.

That effectively ended Luton's hopes of producing a late comeback.

Chelsea could easily have added further goals. João Pedro was denied from close range during stoppage time, while Jamie Gittens struck the inside of the post only to see the ball bounce back into play.

Nevertheless, two goals were enough to comfortably secure progression.

The victory means Alonso has now recorded consecutive wins as Chelsea manager and keeps the Blues moving forward in the Carabao Cup.

Chelsea will face Leeds United in the third round, where the level of opposition should provide a considerably tougher examination.

For Alonso, there were also positives beyond simply progressing. Welbeck immediately opened his Chelsea account, while Estêvão again demonstrated his ability to cause problems in one-on-one situations.

Chelsea can now turn their attention back to the Premier League before preparing for a Carabao Cup third-round meeting with Leeds United.

Alonso will also hope Welbeck's immediate impact gives him another reliable attacking option, while the performances of Estêvão and Chelsea's other younger players provide further encouragement as the season begins to gather momentum.
