Liverpool head coach Arne Slot has accused Tottenham Hotspur defender Micky van de Ven of making a “reckless challenge” that led to a serious injury for Alexander Isak, after the striker was ruled out for a couple of months.

Isak has undergone surgery on an ankle injury that included a fibula fracture and will be sidelined until well into the new year. The injury occurred as he scored the opening goal against Tottenham on Saturday, when Van de Ven dived in to block a shot inside the penalty area.

Slot singles out Van de Ven challenge

Speaking on Tuesday, Arne Slot made clear he was unhappy with the nature of the tackle, despite no punishment being handed out during the match.

“For me it was a reckless challenge,” Slot said. “I spoke a lot about the challenge from Xavi Simons which was completely unintentional. I don't think you'll ever get an injury from that tackle. The tackle of Van de Ven — if you make it ten times — I think ten times there is a serious chance a player gets a serious injury.”

The comments followed confirmation that Isak will be unavailable for “a couple of months”, a major blow for Liverpool given the striker’s form and importance.

No action taken during match

Van de Ven was not booked or penalised for the challenge, in contrast to Tottenham midfielder Xavi Simons, who was sent off in the first half after catching Virgil van Dijk on the calf with his studs.

Slot acknowledged Simons’ red card was justified by the laws of the game but insisted the incident was accidental — unlike the tackle that injured Isak.

“I don’t think you’ll ever get an injury from that tackle,” Slot added, drawing a clear distinction between the two incidents.

Isak facing lengthy absence

Isak’s injury was confirmed after post-match assessments revealed a fractured fibula as part of the ankle damage sustained in the collision. The forward has already undergone surgery and now faces an extended spell on the sidelines.

“It’s going to be a long injury — a couple of months,” Slot confirmed. “A big disappointment for him and for us.”

The absence leaves Liverpool facing a period without one of their most dangerous attacking options during a congested winter schedule.

Fallout from fiery contest

The match itself was already contentious, with physical challenges and refereeing decisions dominating discussion afterwards. Slot’s comments are likely to add further scrutiny to Van de Ven’s style of defending and could reignite debate around consistency in officiating.

For Liverpool, the focus now turns to coping without Isak, while Tottenham Hotspur may yet face retrospective criticism, even if no formal action is taken.

Key Insights

  • Arne Slot labelled Van de Ven’s challenge on Isak as “reckless”.
  • Alexander Isak has suffered a fibula fracture and undergone surgery.
  • The striker is expected to be out for a couple of months.
  • Van de Ven was not punished, unlike Xavi Simons who saw red.
  • Liverpool face a major attacking setback during a busy period.

What’s next?

Liverpool must now assess how to manage Isak’s absence over the coming months, with rotation and tactical adjustments likely during a demanding run of fixtures.

There is also likely to be continued debate around refereeing standards and player safety, particularly as Slot’s comments draw attention to the perceived inconsistency between punished and unpunished challenges.

Was Slot right to call out the challenge — or was it simply an unfortunate collision?
