Antoine Semenyo injury concern emerges after Manchester City heroics against Sunderland

Manchester City have been handed an injury concern after Antoine Semenyo withdrew from Ghana duty because of a swollen ankle.

The 26-year-old played the full 90 minutes and starred in City's dramatic 5-3 victory over Sunderland last weekend, scoring twice and providing an assist.

Semenyo had been selected by Carlos Queiroz for Ghana's international fixtures, but he will instead remain in England to recover ahead of Manchester City's return to Premier League action.

Ghana Football Association president Kurt Okraku has revealed Semenyo was prepared to travel and allow the national team's medical staff to assess him.

Speaking to Asempa FM, Okraku explained that the forward had spoken directly with Queiroz about his condition.

“He told the coach, ‘If you need me, I will come down for the medical team to re-examine me. But the truth is that my leg is swollen, and we need to treat it’,” Okraku said.

Ghana ultimately decided there was little benefit in making Semenyo travel simply to undergo further medical checks before potentially returning immediately to Manchester.

Instead, the priority is allowing him to recover properly in England and potentially return to the Ghana squad during the November international window.

Semenyo has become an important attacking option since leaving Bournemouth for Manchester City in January.

After initially impressing under Pep Guardiola, he has remained influential following Enzo Maresca's appointment and has featured in every City fixture this season.

The Ghana international has registered two goals and three assists, with both goals coming in the Sunderland victory.

There is currently no confirmed recovery timeline for his ankle problem.

That leaves his availability for City's trip to Liverpool on October 11 uncertain, although Ghana's decision to release him from international duty gives him additional time to recover.

Semenyo will miss Ghana's AFCON qualifiers against Ivory Coast and Gambia as well as their friendly against Morocco.

Manchester City will assess Semenyo during the international break before determining whether he can return to full training.

Maresca will hope the problem proves minor, with City's trip to Anfield on October 11 their first match after the break.
