Nottingham Forest head coach Ange Postecoglou has made it clear that the Carabao Cup third-round clash with Swansea City will be used to hand valuable playing time to squad members who have not featured regularly this season. With the Reds embarking on their busiest campaign in years, Postecoglou insists rotation will be essential as Forest battle on four fronts.
Forest face at least eight extra fixtures thanks to their participation in the Europa League, on top of their Premier League and Emirates FA Cup commitments. That workload has been compounded by a summer transfer window that saw 13 new arrivals at the City Ground. Among them were Nicolò Savona and Dilane Bakwa, who both made their debuts in the weekend defeat to [Arsenal].
With the Europa League group stage opener against Real Betis looming next week, Postecoglou stressed the importance of building rhythm and fitness across the squad, especially for players still awaiting their first minutes in a Forest shirt.
Ange Postecoglou: Swansea tie a key opportunity
The Australian coach explained that using the Carabao Cup as a platform to integrate new signings and fringe players is vital in maintaining momentum over the long season.
“Tomorrow is the perfect opportunity to get them out there and playing, give them a feeling of what it’s like to play for the club and get some match fitness into them. This will be our programme up until Christmas and we’re going to need all the players. The last thing you want is to throw players in when they haven’t played for over a month.” — Ange Postecoglou, pre-match press conference
The head coach also confirmed that Brazilian defender Murillo, forced off in the first half against Arsenal, is unlikely to feature against Swansea. He added, however, that the centre-back’s recovery has been positive and he is targeting a return at the weekend.
Building Forest’s new routines
Postecoglou admitted that his opening week at Forest was hectic, with international call-ups leaving him just one training session before his first game in charge. This week has allowed for more preparation, something he hopes will translate into a clearer playing identity.
“The last two days have been good in trying to get the players understanding the routines we’ll have going into games,” he explained. “With me coming in, it’s a great opportunity for us tomorrow night to implement some of the things we want to over the next period.”
The 59-year-old is determined to use the Carabao Cup as a platform not only for development but also for chasing silverware.
Forest’s ambition in the Carabao Cup
While rotation is expected, Postecoglou was adamant that Forest would treat the tie seriously. The Carabao Cup, he argued, presents a realistic chance to deliver a trophy to fans hungry for success.
“I think every opportunity you have to win a trophy you shouldn’t let go because it’s hard to win things in football, especially when you’re at a club that has had success in the past and the supporters want more of it. This cup gives us an opportunity to progress, and we want to give ourselves the opportunity to hopefully win some silverware.” — Ange Postecoglou
Analyst Verdict
FootballPlace analyst John William believes Postecoglou’s approach is pragmatic and necessary given Forest’s heavy fixture load:
“Balancing domestic cups with European competition is always tricky, but Postecoglou’s insistence on using the whole squad is smart. It keeps fringe players motivated and ready, while reducing the risk of injuries to key starters. With so many new arrivals, embedding a style of play quickly is also vital.”
He added: “Murillo’s recovery will be watched closely, but Forest fans should be encouraged by the manager’s confidence in the depth of his squad. A deep Carabao Cup run would only build momentum for the rest of the season.”

Not a Forest fan but I would like to see him succeed. I would even buy a ticket if they reach Wembley to play Spurs in the final.
