Newcastle United have opened negotiations with Benfica over the signing of Amar Dedic, with the Premier League club pushing to lower the Portuguese side's asking price for the Bosnia and Herzegovina international.
The 23-year-old right-back is understood to be interested in a move to St James' Park, where he could reunite with new Newcastle head coach Matthias Jaissle, who played a key role in his development at Red Bull Salzburg.
Newcastle begin Dedic negotiations
Talks between Newcastle and Benfica began on Tuesday, with the Magpies stepping up their pursuit of the defender.
Benfica are reportedly demanding €35 million for Dedic, although Newcastle are hoping to negotiate a lower fee before submitting a formal proposal.
The right-back has already been linked with a move to the Premier League in recent weeks, and negotiations now appear to have progressed into a more concrete phase.
Jaissle reunion could prove decisive
One factor working in Newcastle's favour is Jaissle's existing relationship with Dedic.
The German coach worked with the defender at both FC Liefering and Red Bull Salzburg, where Dedic established himself as one of Austria's most promising full-backs.
During the 2022/23 campaign under Jaissle, Dedic contributed three goals and four assists in 38 appearances, performances that ultimately earned him his move to Benfica.
Newcastle's coaching staff also includes Florens Koch, who was heavily involved in Dedic's development during his academy years at Salzburg.
Benfica prepared to negotiate
Benfica signed Dedic for €10m in the summer of 2025, handing him a contract until 2030 that includes a €50m release clause.
Despite that long-term deal, the Portuguese club are now reportedly willing to listen to offers, provided their valuation is met.
Dedic has started the new season behind Alexander Bah in the pecking order following his involvement at the World Cup, while Daniel Banjaqui also provides competition at right-back.
