Alexis Mac Allister has revealed Liverpool are currently not in a position to offer him a new contract, admitting the situation has left him “very, very sad”.

The Argentina international has two years remaining on his current deal and has watched Liverpool hand improved contracts to fellow midfielders Dominik Szoboszlai and Ryan Gravenberch this summer.

Speaking ahead of Liverpool’s Champions League clash with Atletico Madrid, Mac Allister confirmed his representatives have already held discussions with the club.

However, no new contract offer has arrived.

Mac Allister confirms Liverpool contract decision

Mac Allister revealed there was an opportunity for him to leave Anfield during the summer after learning Liverpool were not offering him an extension.

“There was a chance [I could leave in the summer] as everyone knows,” Mac Allister said.

“I received the news the club had made a decision not to offer me a new contract, which of course makes me very, very sad.”

The midfielder stressed that he believes his commitment to Liverpool cannot be questioned.

“Everybody can see I give 100 per cent for this club every single day in training.

“I have good games and bad games like everyone and I always give my best.”

Szoboszlai and Gravenberch deals add to disappointment

Mac Allister admitted Liverpool’s decision is particularly difficult after seeing Szoboszlai and Gravenberch secure new contracts.

“I see Dominik and Ryan renewing their contracts and that makes me happy as they deserve it, but at the same time it makes me sad as I didn’t get mine. But there is still time.”

Despite his disappointment, Mac Allister insists supporters should not interpret his comments as an indication that he wants to leave.

The Argentine confirmed he had opportunities to move elsewhere during the summer but ultimately decided Liverpool remained the right club for him.

“The fans don’t need to worry as I will give 100 per cent until the last day I am here. We will see what happens.”

Mac Allister also acknowledged that his performances this season could influence Liverpool’s position, suggesting he hopes to convince the club to reconsider.

Iraola responds to Mac Allister comments

Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola responded to the midfielder’s unexpected public comments by stressing there is still plenty of time to address his contractual future.

“We all have responsibilities, contracts with a club,” Iraola said.

“He is very important and has played a lot of minutes very highly. We have time to talk about those contract situations.”

With two years still remaining on Mac Allister’s deal, Liverpool are not facing an immediate deadline. However, his decision to publicly express disappointment has placed considerably more attention on what happens next.
