Zirkzee makes it clear he wants Roma move amid Manchester United frustration

Manchester United forward Joshua Zirkzee has reportedly told the club he wants to leave in January to join AS Roma, drawn by the chance to work under Gian Piero Gasperini.

According to Corriere dello Sport, the 24-year-old Dutch striker has “made it clear” he’s keen on the move after becoming frustrated with his limited role at Old Trafford. Zirkzee has started just once this season, making five total appearances under Rúben Amorim, and remains without a goal or assist.

Zirkzee’s situation has attracted interest from AC Milan and Roma, but it’s the capital club’s project — and Gasperini’s reputation for developing strikers — that has captured his attention. The Italian coach is said to have offered Zirkzee a defined starting role as part of his rebuild at the Stadio Olimpico.

Corriere dello Sport reports that Roma want to finalise an agreement with Manchester United early in the January window, ensuring Gasperini has attacking reinforcements in place as they push for Champions League qualification.

The former Bologna striker is thought to believe Gasperini’s aggressive, movement-based attacking style could reignite his career — especially with the 2026 World Cup on the horizon.

Since arriving at Manchester United in the summer, Zirkzee has struggled to make an impression under Amorim’s system. He’s played only 90 total minutes across all competitions. With Evan Ferguson and Artem Dovbyk both underperforming, Roma view Zirkzee as a better tactical fit to lead their front line.

Zirkzee’s limited opportunities at United are understood to be a key factor in his decision. While Amorim still sees potential in the Dutchman, sources suggest the forward feels a move to Serie A would offer more consistent minutes and a system that suits his strengths.

In our view, Zirkzee’s frustration is understandable. The Dutch forward thrives in fluid, high-tempo setups where he can drop deep and link play — traits that have been underutilised at Manchester United. Gasperini’s system at Roma, with its demand for intelligent movement and pressing from the front, looks a far more natural fit.

A successful switch could rejuvenate Zirkzee’s career in time for international consideration. For United, however, his departure would raise fresh questions about squad planning and the integration of young attacking talent.

United are expected to hold talks with Roma in December regarding the structure of a potential transfer — likely a loan with obligation to buy. Amorim is said to be open to letting Zirkzee go if a suitable replacement can be lined up early in the window.
