Wolves effectively encouraged Jhon Arias to leave the club during internal discussions, with a lack of minutes and financial implications shaping a move.

New details emerging from Brazil indicate the Colombian winger’s departure was driven as much by Wolves’ internal planning as by external interest. While the deal itself is described as settled, conversations behind the scenes played a decisive role in pushing the transfer towards Palmeiras.

According to Globo Esporte, Arias did not anticipate such a swift exit after arriving at Molineux in July 2025. However, the situation shifted once interest emerged exclusively from Brazilian clubs, prompting Wolves to reassess his place in the squad.

Wolves outline limited sporting future

Sources indicate Wolves held meetings with Arias in recent weeks, during which the club outlined a scenario that worked against his long-term prospects. Increased competition for places, combined with squad planning that factored in a potential relegation battle, meant Arias was no longer viewed as a regular starter.

The message was clear. If the winger remained, his minutes were expected to drop significantly.

That sporting outlook also carried a contractual dimension. In the event of relegation, Arias would reportedly face a 50 per cent salary reduction, a clause that immediately altered the financial appeal of staying in England.

Wolves’ priority during the process was to maximise financial return. With Arias’ role diminishing under the current coaching staff, the club became open to a sale rather than risking depreciation in value.

Palmeiras deal fits Wolves’ valuation

While Wolves turned down approaches from Flamengo and Fluminense due to structure and valuation concerns, Palmeiras’ proposal aligned with what the Premier League club were seeking. That allowed talks to progress quickly once the Brazilian champions formalised their interest.

Palmeiras’ offer provided clarity on both fee and payment terms, clearing the path for negotiations on personal terms with the player. At that point, Wolves effectively opened the door for Arias’ return to Brazil.

The move is now in its final stages, with documentation being completed ahead of an official announcement.

International ambitions also influenced decision

Another factor weighing heavily on Arias’ decision was international football. At 28, and without guaranteed status in Colombia’s starting XI, the winger was conscious that reduced playing time in England could damage his World Cup ambitions.

Reports from Brazil suggest Colombia’s national team staff had concerns over his lack of minutes at club level. That only reinforced the appeal of a move where he would be a central figure rather than a rotational option.

With Wolves outlining a limited sporting pathway and Palmeiras offering stability, visibility and prominence, Arias shifted his stance decisively. What began as reluctance turned into acceptance once the broader picture became clear.

What’s next

The transfer is expected to be confirmed shortly, with Wolves and Palmeiras finalising the remaining paperwork. Arias is set to return to Brazilian football with a clearer role and regular minutes, while Wolves close out a deal that fits their financial and squad-planning objectives.
