Wolverhampton Wanderers have renewed their pursuit of Lazio goalkeeper Christos Mandas, according to Il Messaggero. The Midlands club are reported to have made contact over a loan deal with an option to buy, although Lazio are pushing for a permanent transfer in January.

Wolves came close to signing the 24-year-old Greek international during the summer, but talks broke down late in the window. With Ivan Provedel cemented as Lazio’s first-choice goalkeeper, Mandas has yet to feature in Serie A this season and is now eager to secure regular playing time elsewhere.

Mandas unhappy and seeking exit

Mandas’ frustration stems from a lack of opportunities under Maurizio Sarri. Despite being highly rated when he joined Lazio from Crete, the player’s development has stalled due to limited minutes. Il Messaggero claims his valuation has dropped to around €8–9 million, roughly half of what Lazio were asking last summer.

The situation has prompted Wolves to renew their interest, viewing Mandas as a potential long-term successor or rotation option for José Sá.

“Mandas wants more game time and sees a move away as the best solution,” the Italian outlet reports, adding that Wolves’ offer of a loan with an option to buy “does not convince Lazio,” who prefer an immediate sale due to ongoing financial strain.

Lazio seek permanent sale to fund Stankovic deal

Financial limitations have restricted Lazio’s transfer business in recent windows. The club are determined to sell Mandas in January to raise funds for a move for Filip Stankovic, the Venezia goalkeeper and son of former Lazio midfielder Dejan Stankovic.

Sarri’s staff reportedly view Stankovic as the ideal backup to Provedel and want the deal completed before the end of January — but that depends on whether Mandas is sold outright.

Our View: Wolves’ cautious approach makes sense

In our view, Wolves’ strategy reflects a sensible balancing act between financial prudence and squad planning. With José Sá’s long-term future uncertain and Daniel Bentley serving primarily as backup, a loan for Mandas with a purchase clause provides flexibility.

However, Lazio’s stance on a permanent sale may complicate matters. Unless Wolves are willing to meet the €8–9m valuation, they risk losing out to another European club seeking a young, affordable goalkeeper.

Key Insights

  • Wolves remain keen on Lazio’s Christos Mandas after missing out in the summer.
  • Lazio prefer a permanent sale worth around €8–9m due to financial needs.
  • Mandas wants to leave after failing to play in Serie A this season.
  • Lazio plan to reinvest in Venezia goalkeeper Filip Stankovic.
  • Wolves’ offer of a loan with option to buy currently falls short of Lazio’s demands.

What’s Next

Talks between Wolves and Mandas’ representatives are expected to continue in the coming weeks, with a decision likely before the window opens. Lazio are under pressure to generate funds early in January to accelerate the Stankovic deal, meaning Mandas’ future could be resolved quickly once negotiations resume.
