Newcastle United forward Nick Woltemade has opened up about the pressure he faced following his high-profile move from VfB Stuttgart — and how scoring early helped him silence any doubts.

In an interview with Bild, the 23-year-old admitted that replacing Alexander Isak, who forced a late move to Liverpool in August, brought what he called “potential for tension” both inside and outside the club. Newcastle paid €75 million plus bonuses for the German striker, making him one of the club’s most expensive signings ever.

Woltemade made his Premier League debut after the September international break, scoring the decisive goal in a 1–0 win against Wolverhampton Wanderers. Since then, he’s netted six goals in 14 matches, including four in his first five league outings — instantly winning over the St James’ Park crowd.

“The whole Newcastle package had potential for tension”

Speaking about his fast start, Woltemade reflected on the weight of expectation that came with his price tag and timing of arrival:

“The whole Newcastle package had potential for tension, especially since I arrived on the last day. Then there was the transfer fee and the fact that Newcastle’s top striker, Alexander Isak, had left,” he told *Bild*. “The start to the season wasn’t ideal. There was definitely pressure. I was very glad when it subsided.”

He added that finding his feet in England has been easier than expected:

“I quickly realised in Newcastle that it was a good fit not only on a footballing level, but also on a personal one.”

“I didn’t choose the transfer fee”

When asked about the €75m fee, Woltemade said he tries not to think about the money involved:

“I was confronted with it frequently. But I didn’t choose this situation. I’m the least responsible for the sums involved. Nevertheless, I was happy that Newcastle saw enough potential in me to pay that amount.”

The striker added that he sees no difference between a free transfer and a record deal when it comes to mindset — and noted that English football tends to handle transfer fees more calmly than Germany.

“Even though I know that the fee means a few more pairs of eyes are on me,” he said. “Within the team, the transfer fee isn’t a factor at all.”

Our view: Pressure, personality and perfect timing

In our view, Woltemade’s early success is more than just a promising start — it’s a sign of emotional maturity. Many strikers struggle to adapt to the intensity of Premier League football, especially when replacing a popular figure like Isak. But his calmness, awareness of the pressure, and confidence in his fit within Eddie Howe’s setup show he’s embracing the challenge rather than being consumed by it.

His early form could prove vital as Newcastle push for another top-four finish. With his composure and link-up play improving weekly, Woltemade looks like the long-term successor Isak’s departure demanded.
