Sunderland head coach Régis Le Bris has admitted the final weeks of the Premier League season could play a significant role in shaping Wilson Isidor’s future at the club.
The French striker has struggled for form during the current campaign and has not scored since Sunderland’s 2–1 victory away at Chelsea in October 2025. Although he has mostly appeared from the bench in recent matches, Isidor has found it difficult to replicate the performances that made him a key figure for the club last season.
Le Bris, however, insists the player remains fully committed to Sunderland despite a challenging period.
Régis Le Bris backs Wilson Isidor despite goal drought
Speaking about the striker’s situation, Le Bris emphasised that both player and club remain aligned while working to overcome the current slump in form.
“We are on the same page with him. It’s clear it’s hard for him because he performed really well last season and he was the main striker.” — Régis Le Bris
The Sunderland manager noted that adapting to the demands of the Premier League has been a difficult step for many players.
“The demand of the Premier League is high and the competition is different. You have to evolve and get better. The learning curve is not linear, but he is still connected even if he struggles a bit.” — Régis Le Bris
Le Bris also suggested that Isidor’s lack of confidence in front of goal has been a key factor behind his recent struggles.
“If you score it changes the dynamic. Even if you played badly before but you score, it changes your view on the game. If you don’t score for a long period, it becomes harder for your confidence.” — Régis Le Bris
Sunderland striker future may depend on final matches
Transfer speculation surrounded Isidor during the latter stages of the January transfer window, with several continental clubs reportedly monitoring the striker’s situation.
Le Bris acknowledged that players naturally want regular playing time and admitted the remaining matches of the season could influence decisions regarding the squad next year.
"Wilson is a really professional player who wants to play and so when they don’t, it’s hard. The last part of the season will be important. We have nine games to play and the final part will influence the assessment of the season."
Having followed Sunderland’s recent matches closely, Isidor’s role has increasingly shifted toward substitute appearances. However, it remains too early to determine whether the striker could regain a regular starting position before the campaign concludes.
Sunderland injury update ahead of Brighton clash
Le Bris also provided an update on several players ahead of Sunderland’s upcoming Premier League match against Brighton.
Striker Brian Brobbey and defender Dennis Cirkin are both expected to return to the squad after completing full training sessions during the week.
"Brian and Dennis have trained fully this week. They might be available on Saturday."
However, Nordi Mukiele, Robin Roefs and Reinildo will not be ready for the Brighton fixture, although the trio could return for the following match against Newcastle.
Meanwhile, Bertrand Traoré is set to miss six to eight weeks after suffering a knee injury.
