William Saliba has admitted that he was “tempted” by reported interest from Real Madrid, but insists his focus remains firmly on Arsenal and winning trophies under Mikel Arteta.

Speaking in an interview with Téléfoot, relayed by Le10 Sport, the French defender reflected on rumours linking him with a move to the Bernabéu earlier this year before committing his long-term future to the Gunners.

Saliba on Real Madrid’s reported approach

Real Madrid reportedly considered making a move for Saliba last summer, but according to Spanish outlet AS, they opted not to pursue the 24-year-old due to his valuation — one that exceeded that of Dean Huijsen. The report also suggested that Los Blancos could return with an offer in 2026.

Asked about Madrid’s interest, Saliba was honest about the appeal of such an opportunity — but equally clear about his loyalty to Arsenal:

“Of course, it’s always tempting when a club like that tries to lure you, but for me, my desire was to stay at Arsenal. First, win trophies, before thinking about anything else.” — William Saliba, via Téléfoot

The Frenchman signed a new contract with Arsenal in October 2025, extending his stay until 2030. His renewal was seen as a statement of intent by the club, who view him as a central figure in their long-term project.

Arsenal’s defensive cornerstone

Saliba has become one of Arteta’s most indispensable players, forming part of a back line that has conceded the fewest goals in the Premier League this season. His composure, anticipation, and passing range have turned him into one of Europe’s most sought-after centre-backs.

The 24-year-old’s presence was sorely missed last season when injury derailed Arsenal’s title challenge, but his return has coincided with a dominant defensive record — helping the Gunners maintain a six-point lead over Manchester City at the top of the table.

The ‘Bondy connection’ with Mbappé

Saliba and Kylian Mbappé both came through the academy at AS Bondy, a small club in the northeastern suburbs of Paris. Asked whether their paths could cross again at Real Madrid next season, Saliba laughed off the idea:

“No, no, the Bondy connection is with the French national team, for now.” — William Saliba

While Mbappé prepares for his debut season in Madrid, Saliba remains focused on chasing silverware with Arsenal — with Premier League and Champions League glory both within reach this campaign.

Our View: Saliba shows maturity and ambition

In our view, Saliba’s response perfectly sums up his growing maturity as a leader within the Arsenal setup. Rather than chasing the allure of Real Madrid, the Frenchman has prioritised his role in Arsenal’s project — a mindset that reflects the culture Mikel Arteta has built at the club.

If Arsenal go on to lift silverware this season, Saliba’s decision to stay may prove to be a defining moment in both his career and the Gunners’ resurgence.

Key Insights

  • Saliba’s stance: Admits Real Madrid interest was tempting but remains committed to Arsenal.
  • Defensive rock: Crucial to Arsenal’s league-best defensive record.
  • New deal: Extended Arsenal contract until 2030.
  • Bondy link: Jokes that his connection with Mbappé now belongs to the French national team, not Real Madrid.

What’s Next

Arsenal travel to Czechia tomorrow to face Slavia Prague in the Champions League, where Saliba is expected to start once again at the heart of defence. A win would see the Gunners take a major step towards qualifying for the knockout stages with two games to spare.

They then head to the Stadium of Light on Saturday to face Sunderland in the Premier League, aiming to extend their winning run to ten matches in all competitions. Arsenal supporters will be thrilled to have Saliba fully committed — he’s one of the most important players in Arteta’s squad and arguably one of the best defenders in world football right now.
