Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso has explained why Estêvão has struggled for playing time this season, insisting the Brazilian winger will receive more opportunities despite speculation about a January loan move.
The 19-year-old has yet to start a Premier League match under Alonso, having been restricted to two starts across all competitions during the opening months of the 2026/27 campaign.
Estêvão was also an unused substitute during Chelsea's Carabao Cup defeat to Liverpool on Wednesday, prompting further questions about his role at Stamford Bridge.
However, Alonso has made clear that no discussions are taking place over a temporary departure.
Xabi Alonso explains Estêvão's limited playing time
Estêvão enjoyed a promising debut campaign at Chelsea, scoring eight goals and providing three assists in 36 appearances last season.
However, his first season in England was cut short by a hamstring injury in April, and he has struggled to establish himself since returning to action.
The winger has made eight appearances this season, playing 172 minutes across all competitions.
His only two starts have come in the Carabao Cup, while his Premier League involvement has been limited to substitute appearances.
Alonso believes the physical demands of English football are an important factor in the youngster's development.
"You need to be up for it," Alonso explained when discussing the Premier League's intensity.
"But he had the injury and he's in that process."
Chelsea's tactical approach may also contribute to the challenge facing Estêvão.
Alonso has frequently used a system featuring wing-backs and narrow attacking midfielders rather than traditional wingers, increasing the need for the Brazilian to adapt to different roles.
However, the manager has stressed that Estêvão's situation is part of his development and that his attitude is not a concern.
Liverpool omission increases questions over Chelsea future
Estêvão remained on the bench as Chelsea were eliminated from the Carabao Cup by Liverpool on Wednesday.
The match finished 1-1 after extra time, with Liverpool progressing through a 6-5 penalty shootout victory at Anfield.
Despite Chelsea being without Cole Palmer and João Pedro, Alonso opted to start Morgan Rogers, Danny Welbeck and Pedro Neto in attack.
Estêvão was among the substitutes but was not introduced.
Alonso explained that injuries and fitness problems elsewhere in the team restricted his options during the match.
Maxence Lacroix was replaced at half-time, while Moisés Caicedo and Malo Gusto also required substitutions.
The Chelsea manager acknowledged that Estêvão would naturally want more opportunities and accepted responsibility for the player's limited involvement.
However, he has rejected suggestions that the Brazilian could leave on loan in January, stating that no discussions are taking place over such a move.
Alonso promises Estêvão more opportunities
Speaking ahead of Chelsea's Premier League meeting with Manchester United, Alonso reiterated his belief that Estêvão will become an important part of the team.
"Yeah, sure, he will play," Alonso said.
"The season is long and there will be moments for everyone."
The manager explained that Estêvão's lack of minutes reflects the circumstances of individual matches rather than concerns about his attitude.
He also stressed that the winger's adaptation remains an ongoing process following his injury-disrupted first season.
With Chelsea already eliminated from the Carabao Cup, Estêvão will need to compete for opportunities in the Premier League and other remaining competitions.
Alonso nevertheless remains confident that the Brazilian will receive more playing time as the campaign progresses.
