Virgil van Dijk described Brian Brobbey as “a handful” after Liverpool edged Sunderland 1-0 at the Stadium of Light, while also praising the hosts for their resilience and home form this season.
The Liverpool captain’s second-half header proved decisive, ending Sunderland’s unbeaten home league run. Despite Liverpool controlling long spells of possession, Régis Le Bris’ side remained competitive throughout, with Brobbey leading the line aggressively and testing the visitors’ defensive organisation.
Virgil van Dijk on Brian Brobbey’s Sunderland form
Speaking after the final whistle, Van Dijk offered an honest assessment of his fellow Dutch international’s development.
“If you use him well, he's obviously a very handful,” Van Dijk said. “He's strong, he's fit, much fitter than I think he was over the years. And there's so much more to ask from him, and I'm very, very pleased and I'm happy that he's doing so well for Sunderland.
“Like I said, he's a handful, and 90 per cent of today's challenges Ibrahima had to solve, because he was most of the time with Ibrahima (Konaté). Maybe he got fed up with me defending in the national team, but I'm pleased for him and hopefully he can take that form that he has, because he's in form in my opinion, towards the rest of the season and take it with us to the World Cup.”
Brobbey’s physical duel with Ibrahima Konaté was a defining feature of the contest. While Liverpool ultimately kept a clean sheet, the Sunderland striker repeatedly forced defensive decisions and offered a focal point in transition.
Konaté praised as Liverpool hold firm
Van Dijk was equally complimentary of his defensive partner’s display.
“He was incredible today,” he added. “Brobbey obviously was 90 per cent of the time with him, and Brian probably made a lot of defenders’ lives this season pretty difficult, but he did outstandingly. But like the rest of the guys as well, I'm proud of the team.”
Having followed Liverpool’s defensive structure closely this season, the balance between Van Dijk’s leadership and Konaté’s athletic coverage has been central to tight victories such as this one.
Sunderland earn respect despite defeat
Beyond individual praise, Van Dijk made a point of acknowledging Sunderland’s progress under Le Bris.
“I think in general, you have to give credit to Sunderland in general,” he said. “With their manager, to play and to get that many points already on the board and be in such a fortress at home, it's a big credit to all of them. For them, I wish them luck for the rest of the season.”
It remains too early to assess how damaging the defeat may be for Sunderland’s momentum, but their competitive display reinforced their growth this campaign.
