Since arriving on loan from Manchester United in January, Marcus Rashford has impressed at Villa Park—but whether Villa will make his move permanent may come down to one key factor. Football finance expert Stefan Borson tells Football Insider that Champions League football, not Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR), will drive Villa’s decision by the 30 June deadline.

Rashford, 26, joined Villa after falling out of favour under United’s new head coach. A £40 million purchase option was included in the deal, but Villa have yet to announce if they will activate it.

“Rather than PSR, it’s probably more dependent on Champions League qualification. If Villa finish in the top four, the incremental cost of buying Rashford doesn’t materially affect their PSR position for next season,” Borson explains. — Stefan Borson, Football Finance Expert

Borson notes that the amortisation of Rashford’s transfer fee would only hit Villa’s books in 2025‑26, so the only way to unlock the necessary revenue would be by securing Europe’s top‑tier competition:

“They already cover his wages this season, so the decision on 30 June is purely about the extra income that Champions League football brings.”

Key Stats: Rashford at Villa (Since Jan 2025)

Metric Total Since Jan 2025

Do Villa really need him? He won't be free on wages, probably the highest one if he joins Villa in the summer. Im not a Villa fan, but I would move on and look for something else. He plays as a Striker right? You've Watkins already and Rashford has proven over and over again that he;s not a striker.
