After Viktor Gyökeres’ decisive goal-and-assist display in Arsenal’s dramatic 3–2 win over Chelsea, the spotlight was always going to swing firmly in his direction. What followed, however, was a comment from Mikel Arteta that caught many by surprise.

“He’s been very consistent,” the Arsenal manager said.

For much of the football world, that description has not always matched the perception of Gyökeres’ first six months in north London.

Arteta’s defence of his striker

Signed for £64m amid huge expectations, Gyökeres arrived at Arsenal as the long-term answer at centre-forward. Yet his adaptation has been uneven. While Arsenal sit top of the Premier League, debate has persisted over whether their No.9 is offering enough at the sharp end.

There have been matches where Gyökeres has struggled to impose himself, drifting through games with limited touches and seeing his hold-up play questioned against elite opposition. That context made his all-action display at Stamford Bridge all the more significant.

Arteta, speaking ahead of the trip to Nottingham Forest, was asked whether the striker had ever doubted himself.

“I haven’t seen that. He’s a very demanding person. He knows the level that we need.

He really wants to fulfil everything that we expect of him. He’s been really trying, he’s been very consistent, and against Chelsea he had a great game.” — Mikel Arteta

Chelsea display sets the benchmark

The performance against Chelsea felt like a release. Gyökeres’ name echoed around Stamford Bridge as Arsenal supporters tried to will confidence into their striker — and he responded emphatically.

That contribution proved crucial not only in the league, but also in giving Arsenal a narrow advantage ahead of next month’s Carabao Cup semi-final second leg at the Emirates Stadium.

For a player who has endured scrutiny since day one, it was a reminder of the ceiling Arsenal believe they bought into.

Numbers tell a mixed story

Gyökeres has scored eight goals in all competitions this season, a return that sits somewhere between respectable and underwhelming given Arsenal’s ambitions. The concern has been the distribution of those goals.

A nine-game drought between September and October raised alarm bells, only ended by two close-range finishes in a 4–0 Champions League win over Atlético Madrid. Since then, flashes of impact have alternated with quieter outings.

Arteta is adamant that scrutiny is inevitable.

“It’s part of the expectations. But it’s not only for Viktor.

There is pressure on every No.9 in the league, in every top club.” — Mikel Arteta

Competition and opportunity

With Kai Havertz now fit again and Gabriel Jesus making an impactful return, Gyökeres knows his place is not guaranteed. Yet Arteta is expected to trust him again at the City Ground as Arsenal look to extend their six-point lead over Manchester City.

The Forest trip represents another opportunity to prove that the Chelsea performance was not an outlier, but a sign of progress.

Key Insights

  • Gyökeres starred against Chelsea with a goal and an assist.
  • Arteta insists the striker has been “very consistent”.
  • Arsenal fans remain eager to back him despite mixed form.
  • Eight goals this season mask periods of prolonged drought.
  • Competition for the No.9 role is increasing.

What’s Next

Arsenal’s visit to Nottingham Forest offers Gyökeres a chance to build momentum before a demanding run of fixtures. Replicating his Chelsea intensity would strengthen Arteta’s faith and help Arsenal maintain control at the top of the table. Failure to do so, however, could reopen debate with alternatives now fully fit.

Can Viktor Gyökeres make the Chelsea performance his new standard, or will Arsenal’s title push demand a different solution up front?
