Virgil van Dijk has suggested that Liverpool need to be active in the upcoming transfer window if they want to maintain their position as consistent title challengers in the seasons ahead.
The Dutch defender, whose contract is due to expire this summer, has hinted that he is likely to stay at the club. Having captained Liverpool through another competitive campaign, he spoke about his deep connection with the club, calling it “part of me,” and pointing out how much pride he takes in representing Liverpool on and off the pitch.
Although Liverpool are on the verge of clinching the Premier League title—needing just two more victories to be crowned champions—Van Dijk is already thinking beyond this season. He believes the squad needs further reinforcements and has faith in the club’s hierarchy to make the right moves in the transfer market.
Only one player, Federico Chiesa, has been added to the squad under new manager Arne Slot so far, and with players like Trent Alexander-Arnold expected to depart, the defender believes Liverpool must act decisively to stay competitive. Van Dijk expressed his hope that the summer will be a turning point in terms of squad building and that supporters need to trust the club’s leadership to guide them through the transition.
As contract discussions continue, Van Dijk reiterated how meaningful his time at Liverpool has been. Since joining in 2017, he’s embraced the club’s culture and the passion of its fanbase—something he says motivates him to give his all every time he steps on the pitch. The unity between player and club, he believes, is central to the success they’ve enjoyed and will aim for in the future.
Mohamed Salah’s decision to sign a new two-year contract extension was another major boost for the team. Van Dijk praised his teammate’s consistency, work ethic, and remarkable output this season—32 goals and 23 assists—and expressed his belief that Salah can continue performing at the top level for years to come.
Reflecting briefly on the 2-1 win over West Ham, where he scored a late winner after a miscommunication led to Andy Robertson’s own goal, Van Dijk acknowledged the moment as part of football. He described it as unfortunate but ultimately not costly, as the team walked away with the win.
Looking ahead to the summer, his focus remains on finishing the job in the league—but he made it clear that if Liverpool want to stay at the top, investment and smart recruitment will be key.
Who should Liverpool sign in the summer?

They need a left back and a striker (but so does a lot of teams in the PL), and maybe someone who could replace Konate as well?
