Tyler Morton attracts Juventus interest as Liverpool sell-on clause looms

Tyler Morton could be on the move again just months after leaving Liverpool, with Juventus emerging as potential suitors as his stock continues to rise at Lyon.

The 23-year-old midfielder joined the Ligue 1 side permanently in the summer and has quickly established himself as a regular. Morton has already made 21 appearances in all competitions, including a series of impressive displays in the Europa League, where his composure and positional discipline have stood out.

According to reports from TuttoJuve, Juventus are actively tracking Morton’s development and see him as a viable midfield target. While interest from England has not disappeared entirely, the Italian giants are believed to be exploring whether a move could be made as early as January, with the summer also viewed as a realistic alternative.

Morton’s emergence as Lyon’s preferred option in the defensive midfield role has accelerated that interest. His ability to dictate tempo, protect the back line and operate under pressure has translated well to French football, reinforcing the belief that he could adapt to Serie A demands.

Lyon currently value Morton at around €18 million, having signed him for €10 million. On paper, that represents a healthy profit for the French club, but there is a significant caveat.

Liverpool negotiated a 20 per cent sell-on clause as part of Morton’s permanent exit. Crucially, that clause applies to the capital gain Lyon would make on any future sale. As a result, a sizeable portion of any profit would be redirected back to Anfield, reducing Lyon’s incentive to sell cheaply.

Italian sources suggest this clause could become a stumbling block for Juventus, particularly if Lyon hold firm on their valuation.

From Liverpool’s perspective, the situation is entirely positive. The club are not under pressure to influence any decision and would benefit financially from Morton’s continued development. Should his value rise further, the eventual return via the sell-on clause would increase accordingly.

At 23, Morton is still early in his career, and consistent football at Lyon has already accelerated his progression. Further exposure in European competition would only strengthen his profile.

Juventus are expected to continue their assessment before deciding whether to act in January or wait until the summer. Much will depend on Lyon’s willingness to negotiate and whether Morton’s performances continue to drive interest. Liverpool, meanwhile, will watch on with interest as their former midfielder’s value trajectory develops.
