Tottenham endured a difficult night in Madrid as Atlético Madrid claimed a convincing 5–2 victory in the Champions League, leaving Spurs facing serious questions ahead of the decisive stage of the season.

Diego Simeone’s side took control early at the Metropolitano after a disastrous opening spell from Tottenham gifted the hosts a three goal advantage within the first 15 minutes. Although Spurs managed to score twice later in the match, the result leaves their European hopes hanging by a thread.

The defeat also increases pressure on manager Igor Tudor, who is still searching for his first victory since taking charge.

Antonín Kinský suffers difficult Champions League debut

Tottenham’s night quickly unravelled after a series of early defensive mistakes, with goalkeeper Antonín Kinský at the centre of the opening moments.

The 22 year old made his Champions League debut but endured a challenging start. His first error came when he slipped while attempting to play a pass out from the back, allowing Julián Álvarez to recover the ball and assist Marcos Llorente for the opening goal.

Soon after, Atlético doubled their lead when Micky van de Ven lost his footing, enabling Antoine Griezmann to finish.

Kinský’s evening worsened minutes later when a misplaced pass left Álvarez with an empty net to score Atlético’s third goal.

The goalkeeper was substituted after just 17 minutes, with Guglielmo Vicario coming on to replace him.

Defensive problems continue under Igor Tudor

The defeat highlighted Tottenham’s defensive struggles during Tudor’s short spell in charge.

Spurs have now conceded 14 goals across the Croatian coach’s first four matches, a run that has raised concerns about the team’s organisation at the back.

While the early individual errors proved decisive in Madrid, the broader defensive issues have been evident throughout recent matches.

Tudor had indicated before the match that the Champions League tie was not his main priority as the club focuses on improving its league position. However, the heavy defeat has further increased scrutiny around his position.

Champions League hopes now in serious danger

After falling three goals behind early in the match, Tottenham struggled to regain control of the contest.

Pedro Porro and Dominic Solanke both found the net for Spurs later in the game, but Atlético added further goals to maintain their commanding advantage.

The result leaves Tottenham with a difficult task if they hope to keep their Champions League campaign alive.
