Tottenham’s hopes of landing Andy Robertson this month have been quietly boosted after developments involving Liverpool and Roma.

Spurs made a surprise move for the Liverpool left-back last week as Thomas Frank looked to inject experience into a squad struggling for consistency. With Robertson out of contract in the summer, Tottenham initially planned to wait — but opted to accelerate talks and explore a January deal.

Those discussions appeared to stall over the weekend, with reports suggesting Liverpool had put the brakes on any exit.

Why the deal paused

Liverpool’s hesitation centred on their inability to recall Kostas Tsimikas from his loan spell at Roma. With Robertson potentially leaving and no immediate replacement lined up, the club were reluctant to weaken their left side mid-season.

That situation, however, may now be shifting.

Roma sporting director Frederic Massara has confirmed talks with Liverpool are ongoing regarding Tsimikas’ future — while also revealing the Serie A side have identified a possible replacement.

Roma identify alternative as talks continue

Speaking on Sunday evening, Massara confirmed Roma remain in dialogue with Liverpool and namechecked Yannick Carrasco as a player under consideration.

“They are all situations that are evolving,” Massara said.
“We are in dialogue with Liverpool and we’ll see how that develops over the next few days.

“Carrasco is a talented player, but in January it is never easy to do deals. We have a week left to see if there are solutions that can truly strengthen the squad.”

Roma securing an alternative would clear the path for Tsimikas to return to Anfield — a key domino if Liverpool are to sanction Robertson’s departure.

Spurs watching closely

For Tottenham, that represents a potential opening. There is believed to be an agreement in principle between Spurs and Robertson, with the Scotland international open to the move and Spurs keen to add leadership at the back.

Liverpool’s final decision is likely to hinge on whether Roma can complete their own business before the deadline.

With time running out, this has become a waiting game — but one that Tottenham now have reason to believe could swing back in their favour.
