Thomas Frank says Tottenham’s 2-0 win over Reading in their pre-season opener “ticked lots of boxes” as his side got off to a promising start under new leadership.

Spurs used two different lineups across each half, with 22 players getting 45 minutes of action. Debutants Luka Vuskovic and Mo Kudus caught the eye, while goals from Will Lankshear and Vuskovic sealed the win.

Speaking after the match to SPURSPLAY, Frank praised the effort and intensity shown across a “very tough and intense week” in training.

Why Frank Was Pleased with Spurs’ Pre-Season Start

The Danish boss was focused on the bigger picture rather than just the scoreline, highlighting physical gains, tactical sharpness, and attitude as major positives.

“Lots of boxes ticked… fitness, set pieces, pressing, defending, clean sheet. Some elements to improve, but that’s normal. It’s been a good week.” — Thomas Frank to SPURSPLAY

Frank was particularly pleased with how his side defended late on, with players putting their bodies on the line to preserve the clean sheet.

Standout Performers: Vuskovic and Kudus Shine

Luka Vuskovic had a dream debut, assisting the first goal and then scoring the second with a sweetly struck effort. Mohammed Kudus also impressed with his pace and direct play in the final third.

Frank described Kudus as “exciting to watch”, while Vuskovic’s all-round performance confirmed why Spurs were keen to involve the youngster early.

What Frank Said About Spurs’ Defending

The Spurs boss said clean sheets will be vital this season and praised his squad’s willingness to block shots and fight for second balls.

He also credited goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario for two excellent saves late on to preserve the scoreline.

Tottenham 2–0 Reading: Key Stats

Player Goal Assist Minutes
Luka Vuskovic 1 1 45
Will Lankshear 1 45
Mohammed Kudus 45

Analyst Verdict

Thomas Frank’s Tottenham debut ticked key tactical boxes without overcomplicating things. Spurs pressed high, controlled possession phases, and looked more cohesive in set-piece routines — which delivered both goals. Luka Vuskovic offers a unique mix of composure and physicality despite his age, and could fast-track into Premier League minutes if his form holds.

Meanwhile, Mohammed Kudus looked sharp in transition, showing he may thrive in Frank’s quick-passing, vertical approach. The clean sheet matters just as much as the goals — a clear nod that Spurs are aiming to build from a solid foundation. The challenge now is consistency across tougher opponents.

They looked solid, actually controlled and not a mess like under Ange. But, its to early to judge to be honest!
