Tottenham injury update ahead of Roberto De Zerbi’s first match in charge highlights the scale of the challenge facing the new head coach, with several key players racing to be fit for the trip to Sunderland.

Spurs return to Premier League action on 12 April 2026, and De Zerbi has inherited a squad dealing with multiple injuries across key positions as the club look to move clear of the relegation zone.

Tottenham injury update before Sunderland clash

Mohammed Kudus is one of the more positive cases, with the summer signing closing in on a return after a lengthy hamstring layoff. The Ghana international has resumed training, although his comeback is expected to come shortly after the Sunderland fixture.

Based on current timelines, Kudus is more likely to return against Brighton later in April rather than being risked too early.

Potential return date: 15 April 2026 vs Brighton (H)

Goalkeeper situation and Vicario recovery

Guglielmo Vicario continues his recovery from hernia surgery, which was scheduled during the international break to minimise disruption.

The club are targeting a return within weeks, but the Italian is unlikely to feature against Sunderland. That leaves Antonin Kinsky in line to start, despite limited recent appearances.

Potential return date: 15 April 2026 vs Brighton (H)

Midfield concerns and key fitness tests

Pape Matar Sarr could be available for De Zerbi’s first game after missing international action with a shoulder issue. His condition is expected to be clarified closer to matchday.

Rodrigo Bentancur is also progressing following hamstring surgery and may return later in April if recovery continues as planned.

From the last few Tottenham matches we’ve covered, midfield depth has been a recurring issue, particularly during high-intensity fixtures. However, it remains too early to draw firm conclusions about how quickly balance can be restored.

Potential return dates:

  • Pape Matar Sarr: 12 April 2026 vs Sunderland (A)
  • Rodrigo Bentancur: April 2026

Mathys Tel and attacking options

Mathys Tel is another player pushing to return quickly after withdrawing from international duty with a groin problem. There is optimism he could be available for Sunderland, which would provide a timely boost in attack.

Dejan Kulusevski’s situation is less clear. After a long-term knee issue and multiple setbacks, the forward is working his way back but does not yet have a confirmed return date.

Potential return dates:

  • Mathys Tel: 12 April 2026 vs Sunderland (A)
  • Dejan Kulusevski: Unknown

Long-term absentees and defensive concerns

James Maddison and Wilson Odobert are both ruled out for the remainder of the season following ACL injuries, while Ben Davies is also expected to miss the rest of the campaign after suffering a serious ankle injury.

Player Injury Expected Return
Mohammed Kudus Hamstring 15 April 2026
Guglielmo Vicario Hernia 15 April 2026

For 2 years Spurs have been struggling with injuries. It’s hard fo any manager to deal with this, especially when creative players are out
