Tottenham Hotspur skipper Cristian Romero has made his long-term intentions clear — if he heads back to Argentina to finish his career, he will only play for Belgrano.

The centre-back, speaking to El Gráfico, explained that while he remains fully committed to Spurs after signing a contract until 2029, his heart is still with the club where he began his career.

Romero came through Belgrano’s youth ranks, making 19 senior appearances before moving to Genoa in 2018 for €4.25m. Since then, he’s played for Juventus, Atalanta, and Tottenham, where he first arrived on loan in 2021 before sealing a €52m permanent move in 2022.

Romero’s Message on Belgrano

“If I were to return tomorrow, it will be to play for Belgrano. There is no other club, I have a lot of respect for them. It’s the club that saw me grow up. Beyond everything that has happened, it’s something personal for me to play in the club’s shirt.” — Cristian Romero, via El Gráfico

Romero’s comments end any speculation over which Argentine club might lure him home in the twilight of his career. For him, it is Belgrano or nothing.

Why Romero Stayed at Tottenham

The Argentine was the subject of major interest from Atletico Madrid, with Diego Simeone pushing for a deal during the summer. But Spurs’ refusal to sell, combined with Romero’s loyalty, saw him commit to a fresh contract running until 2029.

With Tottenham building around him under new head coach Thomas Frank, Romero is central to their plans for both Premier League and European campaigns. His leadership and aggression have made him indispensable in north London.

The numbers reflect Romero’s journey: from a teenager at Belgrano to a World Cup-winning defender and Spurs captain, now entering his prime.

Analyst Verdict

FootballPlace analyst John William:

Romero’s loyalty is refreshing in a market dominated by constant transfer speculation. Spurs fans will be reassured he turned down Atletico interest to stay long term, especially after penning a deal until 2029.

The Belgrano revelation won’t worry Tottenham. It simply confirms that when Romero eventually leaves Europe, it will be a personal decision — not a footballing one. Until then, he remains Spurs’ defensive leader.

Key Insights

  • Cristian Romero confirms Belgrano is his only future Argentine club.
  • Tottenham captain signed new deal until 2029 this summer.
  • He has made 128 appearances for Spurs since 2021.
  • Atletico Madrid failed to tempt him in the 2025 transfer window.
  • Romero says Belgrano return would be “personal, not professional.”

What’s Next

Romero’s focus is firmly on Tottenham, who face a tricky run of fixtures in September. His leadership will be vital as Spurs aim to solidify their top-four credentials and balance domestic duties with European football.

Further down the line, Belgrano fans can dream of their prodigal son returning. For now, Spurs have their captain locked in for the long haul.

Do you see Romero finishing his European career at Spurs — or could Atletico still tempt him before Belgrano?
