Tottenham have preserved their Premier League status after surviving a dramatic final day which ultimately sent West Ham into the Championship.

The equation heading into Sunday had been straightforward. West Ham needed to defeat Leeds United and hope Everton could take points from Tottenham. The Hammers fulfilled their side of the task, but events elsewhere denied them a final escape route.

Goals from Taty Castellanos, Jarrod Bowen and Callum Wilson delivered victory for West Ham, but Joao Palhinha's strike in north London proved decisive in keeping Tottenham above the drop zone.

Tottenham survive after miserable campaign

Relief rather than celebration appears the most fitting description for Tottenham.

Their season had threatened disaster for months after a collapse in form during 2026, with only two league victories recorded since the turn of the year and a difficult campaign at home.

Managerial instability also played a major role.

Thomas Frank's appointment failed to provide stability before Igor Tudor's interim spell also struggled to halt the decline. Roberto De Zerbi's arrival in April eventually shifted momentum, with three victories from his seven matches proving enough to preserve Tottenham's top-flight status.

Having followed Tottenham's campaign closely this season, the final standings may offer survival, but they do not erase the broader concerns surrounding performances.

West Ham pay the price despite late fightback

For West Ham, the outcome marks the end of a 14-year stay in the Premier League.

The disappointment may feel even greater given how close they came to escaping. Their tally of 39 points would normally have represented enough to survive many previous campaigns, but this season's margins proved unforgiving.

A managerial change earlier in the season also failed to deliver the required turnaround. Nuno Espirito Santo replaced Graham Potter with hopes of changing momentum, but despite isolated improvements, the club remained trapped near the bottom places.

Questions around the club's future direction now immediately begin.

However, it remains too early to determine whether Nuno will remain for a Championship rebuild or whether ownership chooses a different path.

Key points

  • Tottenham secured Premier League survival
  • West Ham beat Leeds but were still relegated
  • Joao Palhinha scored the decisive goal elsewhere
  • Roberto De Zerbi won three matches after arriving in April
  • West Ham's 14-year Premier League stay has ended

What's next

Tottenham's attention will now turn towards rebuilding after a season which severely damaged confidence around the club. Roberto De Zerbi appears set to continue and will likely push for significant squad changes during the summer window.

West Ham face a very different challenge. Championship planning, managerial decisions and potential player departures will now become immediate priorities.

Final-day survival may have rescued Spurs in the short term, but both clubs enter the summer facing major questions.

Who has the bigger rebuild ahead this summer: Tottenham after survival, or West Ham after relegation?
