Belgium defender Timothy Castagne has admitted he came within touching distance of a major transfer this summer, only for Fulham to block the move at the final stage.
The 29-year-old right-back, a regular in Rudi Garcia’s latest 26-man squad for Belgium’s World Cup qualifiers against North Macedonia and Wales, remains a key figure for both club and country. But he revealed at a national team press conference that he was the subject of concrete interest from one of Europe’s giants in the final days of the transfer window.
“A lot happened on Deadline Day”
Castagne confessed that the summer market had been far from quiet, with significant movement in the final hours.
“There was quite a bit going on on Deadline Day. But it was a bit late for Fulham to find a replacement. That makes it difficult for a transfer to happen.” — Timothy Castagne
Ultimately, Fulham refused to sanction his departure, citing the lack of time to secure cover.
Pressed on which club tried hardest to land him, Castagne admitted Juventus were among those pushing for his signature:
“Was there interest from Juventus? Among others, yes. But there was no frustration. I couldn’t do anything about it. If they couldn’t find a replacement, then that’s how it is. If a club had come earlier, it might have been different.” — Timothy Castagne
Belgium rivalry with Meunier
With the national team, Castagne faces competition from Lille defender Thomas Meunier for the right-back position. Yet he insists that the battle for a starting spot has no negative impact on their relationship.
“We get along very well. That doesn’t change because of the so-called ‘competition’. It’s up to the coach to make decisions. We both give everything in training, but whoever plays, our relationship won’t be affected.” — Timothy Castagne
Analyst verdict: Fulham standing firm
FootballPlace analyst John William believes Fulham’s refusal to let Castagne leave is indicative of their determination to keep stability despite injuries elsewhere in the squad:
“Fulham simply couldn’t afford to lose Castagne so late in the window. Juventus’s interest shows how highly rated he is, but Fulham prioritised security over a big fee. Castagne’s professionalism in handling the situation reflects his maturity.”

For now, however, his focus is on helping Belgium navigate crucial qualifiers and on maintaining Fulham’s stability in the Premier League. With his contract running until 2026, his future could resurface as a transfer story in January.

Marco Silva would have left if they would have let him go and didnt get any replacement for him. He only plays when Tete is not fit, so I do understand him when a mega club like Juventus comes you want to give that a go.
