Newcastle United icon Tim Krul has officially hung up his gloves at the age of 37, ending a remarkable career that spanned more than two decades. Speaking to Dutch outlet NOS, the goalkeeper confirmed his retirement and revealed the emotional response that followed his announcement.

“It’s been a crazy week since I made the decision,” Krul admitted. “My phone didn’t stop ringing.”

Out of contract since leaving Luton Town earlier this summer, the Dutchman said he had offers from Eredivisie clubs and opportunities abroad, but geography and family considerations ultimately guided his decision. He explained that he only would have continued if an opportunity close to Norwich or London had arisen.

Krul on life after football

Instead of extending his playing days, Krul has been preparing for life off the pitch. He recently completed a technical director course in England through Portsmouth University, organised by the players’ union.

“I had to hand in projects, give presentations and sit in class again,” he explained. “It was fun, but completely outside my comfort zone.”

Now, the former Netherlands international is exploring the “business side” of football and holding talks about potential opportunities.

Krul’s affection for Newcastle United

Reflecting on his playing days, Krul singled out his Newcastle United debut as an 18-year-old in Palermo during the UEFA Cup and his record-breaking 14-save performance against Tottenham Hotspur.

He did not hide his love for the club where he spent more than a decade:

“That remains a great club. Eleven years there do leave their mark. Those would be great things, but we’ll see where I go in the coming years.” — Tim Krul via NOS

The comments will excite Newcastle supporters, who remember his long service at St James’ Park and now see the possibility of a return in a staff capacity.

Analyst Verdict

FootballPlace analyst John William believes Krul’s connection to Newcastle makes a return a natural step:

“Krul is woven into the fabric of Newcastle United’s modern history. From his UEFA Cup debut as a teenager to his iconic save-laden performances, he was a pillar of the club for over a decade. With Newcastle now established as a Champions League side under Eddie Howe, Krul’s experience could be invaluable in a staff role.”

He added: “His technical director course shows he is serious about the next chapter. A role at Newcastle, whether in coaching or administration, would be a fitting continuation of his football journey.”
