Arsenal missed a golden opportunity to tighten their grip on the Premier League title race after being held to a goalless draw by Nottingham Forest on Saturday evening.
Fresh from their midweek Carabao Cup victory over Chelsea, Mikel Arteta’s side arrived at the City Ground with momentum and margin. They left with neither. Outplayed in the first half and unable to find a breakthrough despite heavy second-half intervention, the league leaders were brought back down to earth on a night that exposed uncomfortable flaws.
Here are three things FootballPlace learned from a frustrating stalemate in the Midlands.
Arsenal fail to punish Manchester City slip
Opportunities to capitalise on Manchester City errors are rare. On Saturday, Arsenal were handed one — and let it pass.
City’s defeat in the Manchester derby meant Arsenal could have stretched their lead at the summit from six points to nine. Facing a Nottingham Forest side sitting 17th and recently knocked out of the FA Cup by Championship opposition, the task looked clear.
Instead, Arsenal were second best for long stretches. While David Raya, William Saliba and Declan Rice held their standards, others failed to match them.
Anonymous displays from Martin Ødegaard and Martín Zubimendi blunted Arsenal’s rhythm, allowing Forest to dictate the tone early.
The consequence is significant. Arsenal have now failed to score in consecutive Premier League matches for the first time since 2012 and once again missed the chance to punish City for dropped points. With Aston Villa able to close the gap on Sunday, generosity is becoming a worrying theme.
Another false dawn for Viktor Gyökeres
Midweek felt like a turning point.
Against Chelsea, Viktor Gyökeres delivered his most convincing Arsenal performance to date, scoring and assisting in a statement 3–2 win. The hope was that the £63.5m signing had finally found his footing.
At the City Ground, those hopes quickly faded.
Gyökeres struggled badly against the Forest centre-backs, repeatedly outmuscled by Nikola Milenković and caught from behind by Murillo when through on goal. His physicality — meant to be his edge — offered little advantage, and his movement lacked sharpness.
With just five goals in 20 Premier League appearances, the numbers are becoming difficult to ignore. Gabriel Jesus was not transformative when introduced, but his link play and spatial awareness offered more fluidity. Add the return to fitness of Kai Havertz, and Gyökeres is running out of time to justify Arteta’s faith.
Arteta’s bold substitutions fail to deliver
Arteta rarely pulls the trigger early. On Saturday, he did — and it still wasn’t enough.
Recognising Arsenal were being matched or bettered, the Spaniard made four substitutions before the hour mark. Gabriel Martinelli was first sacrificed, followed soon after by Ødegaard, Gyökeres and Noni Madueke.
Bukayo Saka was the headline introduction, supported by the usually reliable impact of Mikel Merino and Jesus. The changes swung momentum, but not the outcome.
Arsenal managed just seven shots in the second half, with only three on target, failing to convert territorial dominance into goals. Squad depth has been hailed as one of Arsenal’s great strengths this season — but here, Arteta’s silver bullet misfired.
Key Insights
- Arsenal missed a major chance to extend their lead over Manchester City.
- Consecutive goalless league games raise attacking concerns.
- Viktor Gyökeres’ inconsistency remains a growing problem.
- Arteta’s early substitutions changed rhythm, not results.
- The title race remains tighter than it needed to be.
What’s Next
Arsenal must respond quickly to avoid allowing doubt to creep into a previously commanding position. With rivals ready to capitalise on any slip, sharper execution in the final third is now essential. Arteta faces key selection calls up front, and patience with underperforming attackers may soon wear thin.
Are Arsenal being too forgiving in the title race — and is it time for Arteta to rethink his faith in Gyökeres?
