Thibaut Courtois has hailed the emergence of young Belgian goalkeeper Senne Lammens, predicting big things for the 23-year-old ahead of Manchester United’s Premier League showdown with Liverpool this weekend.

Lammens, who joined United from Royal Antwerp FC in the summer, made his debut before the international break against Sunderland — and impressed both supporters and his national team’s most famous shot-stopper.

Speaking to multiple British outlets, Courtois said:

“The first match was a preview of what Manchester United fans can expect from him. He’s a tall guy, he’s not afraid to come for crosses, and he’s got real personality.” — Thibaut Courtois

The Real Madrid keeper added that he has full faith in Lammens as he prepares to start at Anfield under Rúben Amorim.

“I’m sure he can do well,” Courtois continued. “He’s got a tough game this weekend, so I hope everything goes well for him if he plays. I wish him the best.”

Lammens ready for Liverpool test

The young Belgian is expected to start against Arne Slot’s Liverpool, who are looking to recover from a poor run of form. Courtois, meanwhile, will return to Anfield himself in early November when Madrid face Liverpool in the Champions League — and he knows exactly how intimidating the venue can be.

“It’s a difficult stadium,” he said. “I’ll be there myself in a few weeks, on 4 November. It’s always a tough match, and Liverpool need to bounce back after a couple of defeats.”

Promising debut and fan reaction

Lammens kept a clean sheet on his United debut and received glowing praise from fans across social media.

One supporter joked, “Are you Schmeichel in disguise?”, referencing club legend Peter Schmeichel, who led the Reds to their historic Treble in 1999.

It’s early days, but the numbers reflect a composed debut that justified Amorim’s decision to trust the youngster. His confidence on crosses and quick distribution have drawn comparisons with Courtois himself.

Analyst verdict – Belgium’s next in line?

In my view, Courtois’ endorsement carries real weight. He rarely praises lightly, and for him to single out Lammens suggests Belgium’s goalkeeping succession plan might already be in motion.

FootballPlace analyst John William adds:

“Lammens has the right profile — tall, calm, modern with the ball at his feet. United fans shouldn’t expect miracles overnight, but the signs are encouraging. If he performs at Anfield, it could fast-track his rise for both club and country.”

Key insights

  • Thibaut Courtois praises Senne Lammens as “a preview” for United fans.
  • The 23-year-old joined Manchester United from Royal Antwerp in summer 2025.
  • Lammens kept a clean sheet on debut versus Sunderland.

What’s next for Manchester United and Lammens?

Manchester United visit Liverpool on 19 October, followed by a home match against Brighton on 25 October. If Lammens impresses in those fixtures, he could seriously challenge Altay Bayındır for the No.1 spot in Amorim’s squad rotation.

For Courtois, the next stop is also Anfield — this time in Champions League action on 4 November, where he’ll hope his words about his young compatriot prove prophetic.
