Tariq Lamptey completes £6m move from Brighton to Fiorentina

Tariq Lamptey has officially joined Fiorentina from Brighton in a deal worth up to £6m, according to Ben Jacobs with the Ghana international signing after weeks of negotiations. As FootballPlace reported on 26 August, the Italian club had made Lamptey their priority defensive reinforcement, and the deal has now been confirmed before the transfer deadline.

The 24-year-old right-back departs the Premier League after an injury-hit spell on the south coast, where he showed flashes of brilliance but struggled for consistency. Fiorentina have been tracking Lamptey since early summer and believe his pace and attacking energy can transform their right flank in Serie A.

Fiorentina’s pursuit of Lamptey stems from a long-standing need at right-back. The club lost several defensive options earlier this summer and had targeted Premier League profiles to bolster Vincenzo Italiano’s squad.

As we reported in the original piece, Lamptey’s “low-cost, high-upside” profile appealed to La Viola, who see him as both a Serie A-ready defender and a player with potential resale value if he regains full fitness and form.

Lamptey joined Brighton from Chelsea in January 2020 and quickly became a fan favourite for his explosive pace and attacking drive. However, recurring hamstring and knee issues limited his availability, and he finished the 2024/25 campaign with just 14 Premier League appearances.

Despite that, he leaves with the respect of Brighton fans for his commitment and flashes of quality that made him one of the league’s most exciting young full-backs when fit.

FootballPlace analyst John William says Fiorentina are taking a calculated gamble:

“At £6m, this is a clever piece of business. Lamptey’s injuries held him back in England, but his qualities — pace, 1v1 defending, attacking overlaps — are tailor-made for Serie A, where the tempo suits him better. Fiorentina are betting that a change of environment reignites his career.”

William added: “For Brighton, it’s a logical exit. They free up wages and squad space while collecting a reasonable fee for a player who was not central to Fabian Hürzeler’s plans.”

Lamptey will undergo integration into Stefano Pioli’s system immediately, with Fiorentina expecting him to compete for the starting right-back role after the international break.

For Brighton, the departure may prompt a late dip into the market, though Fabian Hürzeler remains confident in his full-back depth.
