Sunderland have impressive seven-year record on their side ahead of Chelsea clash — the Black Cats’ resurgence under Regis Le Bris has been one of the Premier League’s early success stories, and they travel south buoyed by a long-standing record that few fans outside Wearside may realise.

Sunderland currently sit seventh in the Premier League, level on points with Chelsea but behind on goal difference. For a newly promoted side, it’s been an exceptional start — built on defensive discipline, smart recruitment, and the leadership of Granit Xhaka, whose experience in London has proved invaluable.

Sunderland’s incredible London record

The statistic that should fill Sunderland fans with optimism? The club have not lost a league game in London since 2018. That’s a run of 13 unbeaten matches in the capital — the longest such streak in the club’s history.

That sequence includes four wins and nine draws across multiple London venues, from Craven Cottage to the Emirates, and Le Bris’ men will aim to make it 14 this weekend at Stamford Bridge.

“The balance in Le Bris’ side is fantastic right now,” one club source told local reporters. “They have a solid defence, a combative midfield, and an attack full of energy. The togetherness is what’s driving results.”

With Sunderland thriving in transition and showing resilience in tight away games, the trip to Chelsea comes at a time when belief in the dressing room is sky-high.

History favours Chelsea — but times have changed

Despite that impressive run, Chelsea have dominated this fixture in recent years. The Blues have won their last three home games against Sunderland, with an aggregate score of 11-3, including a 5-1 victory in 2017.

Date Result Competition
17 Dec 2013 Sunderland 2–1 Chelsea League Cup
19 Apr 2014 Chelsea 1–2 Sunderland Premier League
29 Nov 2014 Sunderland 0–0 Chelsea Premier League
24 May 2015 Chelsea 3–1 Sunderland Premier League
07 May 2016 Sunderland 3–2 Chelsea Premier League
21 May 2017 Chelsea 5–1 Sunderland Premier League

Historically, Sunderland have struggled against Chelsea, losing 21 of their last 26 meetings, but this version of the Black Cats is built differently. With a structured press, fluid attack, and newfound confidence, Le Bris’ men are capable of testing elite opposition — and that includes Enzo Maresca’s high-pressing Chelsea side.

Sunderland’s balance under Le Bris

Le Bris’ philosophy has reshaped the club’s identity. His Sunderland side play with composure, compactness, and attacking intent rarely seen since their Premier League return. The defensive core of BallardAlderete, and Mukiele has been reliable, while Xhaka’s leadership has transformed midfield intensity.

In attack, Traore and Le Fee provide width and flair, with Isidor ensuring Sunderland carry a real goal threat. Their mix of experience and youthful exuberance has made them one of the league’s most watchable underdogs.

Our View

In our view, Sunderland’s record in London may not guarantee a result — but it symbolises their evolution under Le Bris. The Black Cats no longer approach big away days with fear; they do so with a plan, a structure, and growing self-belief.

Chelsea remain favourites on paper, but Sunderland’s form, confidence, and defensive solidity make them dangerous opponents. If they maintain their London streak, it would further cement their status as this season’s surprise package.

Analyst Verdict

FootballPlace analyst John William believes Sunderland’s mentality shift is key. “I think Le Bris has built something quietly impressive,” he says. “They’re brave on the ball, disciplined off it, and play with zero inferiority complex. A result at Stamford Bridge would send another message.”

In my view, while Chelsea’s quality is undeniable, Sunderland’s unity and defensive balance give them a genuine chance. Their London record isn’t a fluke — it’s a reflection of belief and tactical maturity.

That streak will end quickly, this weekend actually. I do think it will be a tough game for us because we struggle a lot against low block / compact teams, but I do think we will win it and we should.
