Liverpool and England legend Steve McManaman has criticised Sunderland’s tactics following their 1-0 Premier League victory over Leeds United at Elland Road on 4 March 2026.

Speaking on TNT Sports after the final whistle, McManaman described elements of the visitors’ approach as “everything wrong with the game” despite the result lifting Sunderland to 40 points in their first season back in the top flight.

The decisive moment came in the second half when Habib Diarra converted from the penalty spot after a VAR review for handball. Referee Stuart Attwell initially allowed play to continue before being sent to the pitchside monitor and awarding the spot-kick.

Diarra’s effort squirmed beyond Karl Darlow despite the goalkeeper getting close, handing Régis Le Bris’ side a lead they would not relinquish.

Sunderland secure vital win at Elland Road

The contest itself lacked sustained quality. Leeds began on the front foot and enjoyed spells of territorial pressure, but Daniel Farke’s side struggled to translate possession into clear-cut opportunities.

Moments before the penalty decision, Joe Rodon had a header ruled out for offside, a call that briefly energised the home crowd before the momentum swung in Sunderland’s favour.

Once ahead, the visitors focused on game management. A series of stoppages and slowed restarts disrupted Leeds’ rhythm as Sunderland protected their advantage in a tense atmosphere.
While such tactics are often part of closing out narrow away wins, they did not impress everyone watching.

“I thought there was too much playacting, too much time wasting, I thought everything wrong with the game came out tonight. I know Sunderland won’t care but as somebody who watches it and appreciates and wants to see nice football, getting the ball down and playing, there was a real lack of quality tonight from both teams.” — Steve McManaman, TNT Sports

Why the result matters

Despite criticism of the spectacle, Sunderland will prioritise the outcome. The victory marked their first away league win since October 2025 and moved them onto the symbolic 40-point mark, widely regarded as the threshold for Premier League safety.

For Leeds, the defeat reinforces an ongoing issue. Promising build-up phases have too often lacked a clinical edge, and that pattern continued here. Their inability to convert pressure into goals ultimately proved decisive.

What’s next?

Sunderland will look to build on the result when they return home next weekend, aiming to consolidate their position in mid-table. Leeds, meanwhile, face a crucial run of fixtures in March that could shape their campaign, with Farke likely to address the lack of cutting edge in the final third before their next outing.

Whether the debate around game management lingers may depend on future performances. For now, Sunderland leave Elland Road with three points, even if the style of victory divided opinion.
