Sebastian Bornauw is pushing for a January exit from Leeds United, with his representatives actively offering him to clubs as he looks for a more secure role away from Elland Road.
That is according to BILD, who report growing interest from Germany as the centre-back seeks clarity over his future after slipping back down the pecking order under Daniel Farke.
Bornauw ‘wants to leave’ Leeds this month
BILD state that Sebastian Bornauw is unhappy with his current situation at Leeds United and is keen to move before the January window closes.
The Belgian defender had forced his way back into the side earlier in the winter following an injury to Joe Rodon, delivering solid performances against Liverpool and Manchester United. At that point, a transfer appeared unlikely.
However, Bornauw has since returned to the bench and was limited to a brief late cameo in Leeds’ defeat to Newcastle United this week — a development that has reportedly accelerated his desire to leave.
Cologne eye ‘spectacular return’
Among the clubs monitoring the situation is FC Köln, who are actively searching for reinforcements amid what BILD describe as “immense” defensive problems.
Köln’s interest in Bornauw is not new. Before Christmas, the Bundesliga side were said to have already reached an agreement with the defender over a return to the club, where he previously played. That move stalled when Bornauw was recalled into the Leeds starting XI.
Now, with the defender back out of the team, there is renewed optimism in Cologne that a deal could be revived.
Agent sounding out alternatives
Bornauw is said to be frustrated at being viewed as little more than a short-term solution and wants assurances over regular football. As a result, his agent has begun offering him to other clubs across Germany.
Leeds, for their part, are reportedly already exploring the market for another centre-back — a sign that the club may be open to letting Bornauw go if the right opportunity arises.
The major obstacle remains finances. Köln would currently only be able to afford a loan deal, though BILD report they would take Bornauw “immediately” if Leeds were willing to sanction such a move.
Key insights
- Bornauw wants to leave Leeds during the January window
- His agent is actively offering him to clubs
- FC Köln are keen on a return but prefer a loan
- The defender is unhappy with a reduced role
- Leeds are already looking at centre-back replacements
What’s next
With the transfer window entering a decisive phase, Bornauw’s future could be resolved quickly if Leeds find suitable defensive cover. A loan move to Germany appears the most realistic outcome, particularly if Köln can move fast.
Much will depend on Leeds’ short-term squad needs and whether they are prepared to lose defensive depth mid-season.
