Napoli midfielder Scott McTominay is set to undergo a heart procedure in London after a cardiac issue was discovered in recent days.

According to Repubblica, the Scotland international will undergo surgery tomorrow to address an arrhythmia, with Napoli optimistic that the procedure will resolve the problem.

The Serie A club have already prepared a rehabilitation programme for McTominay as they look to get the former Manchester United midfielder back into Massimiliano Allegri’s squad.

Napoli outline McTominay recovery plan

Sporting director Giovanni Manna has provided details on the expected recovery process, explaining why McTominay will be unavailable for several weeks.

“It will take 28 days to obtain sporting clearance because he will be taking prohibited anticoagulant medication,” Manna said.

“For two weeks, the player will rest and then he will resume sporting activity without contact.”

Based on that timetable, Napoli are hoping McTominay can return to contention during October.

His absence will affect Allegri's options across a busy period involving Serie A, the Coppa Italia and Champions League.

Napoli use international break for surgery

The timing of the procedure has been carefully selected.

Napoli have chosen the international break to minimise the number of club matches McTominay misses and provide him with as much uninterrupted recovery time as possible.

The club's initial objective is for the midfielder to rejoin the group following the break, although there is some uncertainty surrounding exactly when he will be cleared for competitive football.

Doctor Carlo Pappone told Radio Kiss Kiss Napoli that the procedure should not be considered straightforward in the context of a professional athlete.

According to Pappone, McTominay could require at least two months before receiving full clearance to return to competitive action.

That assessment differs significantly from Napoli's initial 28-day pathway towards sporting eligibility.

Final return date depends on operation

For that reason, a definitive comeback date cannot yet be established.

Napoli's current plan provides an indication of the various stages of McTominay's rehabilitation, but the outcome of the procedure will ultimately determine how quickly those stages can be completed.

The priority will be ensuring the Scotland international has completely recovered before returning to full-contact training and competitive football.

A clearer timeline should therefore emerge after McTominay has undergone the procedure in London.

Key Points

  • Scott McTominay will undergo a heart procedure in London to address an arrhythmia.
  • Napoli sporting director Giovanni Manna says 28 days are required before sporting clearance due to anticoagulant medication.
  • McTominay is expected to rest for two weeks before initially returning to non-contact activity.
  • Napoli's current objective is to have him available again during October.
  • Doctor Carlo Pappone has offered a more cautious estimate, suggesting full clearance could require at least two months.

What’s Next?

McTominay will undergo the planned procedure before Napoli and their medical staff reassess his condition.

The operation's outcome should provide a much clearer indication of whether Napoli's proposed October return is realistic or whether the more cautious two-month recovery estimate proves necessary.

Until then, Allegri will have to prepare for several important domestic and European fixtures without the Scottish midfielder.
