Sandro Tonali criticism has intensified in Italy after former international Antonio Cassano launched a scathing assessment of the Newcastle United midfielder’s performances for the Azzurri ahead of a decisive World Cup play-off.

Italy face Northern Ireland next month in a World Cup play-off semi-final in Bergamo. The winner will progress to a final against either Wales or Bosnia and Herzegovina for a place at this summer’s tournament. After finishing second behind Norway in their qualifying group, Italy once again find themselves navigating the play-off route.

Gennaro Gattuso is expected to rely heavily on Tonali in midfield. However, Cassano has publicly questioned the 24-year-old’s impact at international level.

Sandro Tonali criticism from Antonio Cassano

Speaking to Il Messaggero, Cassano was blunt in his evaluation.

“It's poor, but I'm convinced that Gattuso, with his ideas, will keep things on track and we'll get to the World Cup,” he said.

“The only champion is Donnarumma. Tonali plays in the Premier League and never gets it. He runs and runs… he should do athletics. He and Barella are poor. We need quality.”

Cassano’s remarks arrive at a sensitive moment for Italy, who have failed to qualify for the last two World Cups, with their most recent appearance coming in 2014.

While criticism of Tonali’s international displays is not entirely new, the timing increases scrutiny as the national side approach another high-pressure fixture.

Tonali’s Newcastle United role growing in importance

At club level, Tonali’s position has strengthened in recent weeks.

Speculation linked him with a January move away from St James’ Park, including reported interest from Arsenal. His agent, Giuseppe Riso, dismissed those suggestions as “nonsense” and insisted no discussions took place.

With Bruno Guimarães sidelined through injury until after the upcoming international break, Tonali has assumed greater responsibility in Eddie Howe’s midfield.

He responded emphatically, scoring twice in an FA Cup victory over Aston Villa and delivering a strong performance in Azerbaijan shortly afterwards. Those contributions underlined his growing leadership role during a challenging spell for Newcastle.

Having followed Newcastle’s recent fixtures, Tonali’s influence has appeared more pronounced when entrusted with central control. His defensive coverage and tempo-setting have become increasingly important in Guimarães’ absence.

However, translating that club form consistently to the international stage remains the next challenge.
