Roy Keane has labelled Matheus Cunha “the real deal” after Manchester United’s narrow 2-1 Premier League defeat away to Aston Villa.

United left Villa Park empty-handed despite a strong overall performance, with Morgan Rogers proving the difference for the hosts. Rogers’ first-half strike opened the scoring before Cunha levelled just before the break, only for Rogers to strike again and secure Aston Villa’s 10th successive win in all competitions.

That victory keeps Villa third in the Premier League heading into Christmas, one point behind Manchester City and three adrift of leaders Arsenal — a remarkable run that underlines their momentum under Unai Emery.

Keane impressed despite United defeat

Although the result went against Manchester United, Keane saw plenty of encouragement in Ruben Amorim’s side — particularly in Cunha’s display.

The Brazilian, who joined United from Wolves in a £62.5m summer move, scored his second goal for the club at Villa Park. It was a moment of composure in a tight contest, even if it was later followed by a glaring miss that could have changed the outcome.

Speaking on Sky Sports, Keane made his feelings clear when asked about Cunha’s potential.

“It’s more than potential, he’s the real deal. It was never in doubt — it’s a brilliant finish. Then he misses a sitter in the second half which defies logic really, it’s hard to see how he missed that.” — Roy Keane, Sky Sports

Cunha showing signs of being United’s focal point

Despite that missed opportunity, Cunha’s overall contribution again stood out. He was central to United’s attacking play, linking phases, pressing aggressively and repeatedly getting into dangerous positions.

Having followed United’s early months under Amorim, Cunha increasingly looks like a forward the system is being built around — even if consistency in front of goal remains a work in progress.

His performance against one of the league’s most in-form sides only reinforced why United were prepared to invest heavily in him.

Matheus Cunha vs Aston Villa – match stats

Stat Output
Goals 1
Expected goals (xG) 0.66
Expected assists (xA) 0.15
Key passes 2
Crosses (accurate) 3 (1)
Accurate passes 38/43 (88%)
Recoveries 7
Ground duels (won) 7 (4)

Those numbers reflect a forward heavily involved in all phases, not just finishing — an attribute Keane has consistently valued in attacking players.

Our view: signs of progress amid frustration

In our view, this was one of those defeats that tells a more positive story than the scoreline suggests for Manchester United. Against an Aston Villa side flying high, United competed, created chances and showed attacking cohesion.

Cunha embodies that progress. While the missed chance will draw headlines, Keane’s assessment cuts to the core: the quality is there. Refinement, rather than reinvention, is what is required.

If United can pair performances like this with sharper game management, results should follow.
