Liam Rosenior has warned Chelsea players that discipline will directly influence team selection after the club’s 10th red card of the season intensified scrutiny at Stamford Bridge.

Pedro Neto’s dismissal in the 2-1 defeat to Arsenal marked another setback in what Rosenior has described as a “deep-lying” problem. The winger received two quick yellow cards, first for dissent and then for a challenge on Gabriel Martinelli, leaving Chelsea short-handed once again.

Chelsea have now seen nine different players sent off across all competitions this term, equalling the highest tally ever recorded by a Premier League side in a single campaign — with more than two months still to play.

Rosenior admitted the trend cannot continue and confirmed it will affect his future line-ups.

“It needs to improve.
The first thing is: you pick players who are showing that improvement.

I can’t afford to go through a season every two or three games with a red card. It’s just not possible. I need to see improvement in that.”

Neto has apologised to the squad and will miss Wednesday’s fixture against Aston Villa through suspension.

Discipline becoming decisive factor

Rosenior made it clear the issue extends beyond individual incidents.

“I just need to see an improvement in the behaviour now. It's not just Pedro. We've had bookings, people speaking about dissent. We've had needless bookings in terms of fouls.

If we are to improve and get to where we want to be, we have to make a conscious step now to make sure it doesn't happen again.”

Having followed Chelsea’s recent fixtures, the pattern has been difficult to ignore. Moments of technical quality have frequently been undermined by lapses in composure.

However, it remains too early to determine whether stricter selection decisions will stabilise performances. With crucial league fixtures ahead, behavioural consistency may prove as important as tactical execution.
