Romero's Tottenham future uncertain as interest grows from Atletico and Real Madrid

Cristian Romero’s future at Tottenham Hotspur is uncertain, with speculation surrounding his potential departure this summer. The Argentine centre-back has faced a challenging season, missing significant time due to injuries, including a toe issue and a hamstring problem. Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou admitted that he made an error by starting Romero in the opening match of the season, despite the defender not having a full pre-season.

Romero, too, has expressed dissatisfaction with Tottenham’s medical staff, particularly in the handling of his hamstring injury, further fueling doubts about his future at the club.

As Romero approaches the final two years of his contract, interest in him is growing. Atletico Madrid have expressed interest, with manager Diego Simeone keen to bring the 26-year-old to Spain, while Real Madrid is also reportedly monitoring the situation.

Romero has informed his agents that he wants to leave Tottenham and move to Spain this summer, but Fabrizio Romano has emphasized that his departure hinges on an "important offer" being made. Romano explained: “It’s a possibility but not something guaranteed as it depends on Daniel Levy, and we know how strong Spurs are in negotiations. So it’s something possible, definitely; but it has to be an important financial package or Levy won’t accept anything.”

For now, Tottenham's plans to offer Romero a new contract and make him their highest-paid player have been put on hold, as he is pushing for a move. If a suitable offer arrives, it’s believed that Levy would demand around £60 million for the player. Whether Atletico Madrid or any other club will meet this valuation remains to be seen.
