Cristian Romero to Atletico Madrid is not a done deal — despite what reports from Argentina may suggest.
Sky Sports reporter Michael Bridge has dismissed claims that Spurs have accepted a €65m bid from the La Liga giants. Tottenham insist no agreement is in place, with new boss Thomas Frank viewing the defender as a core piece of his rebuild.
The Argentine centre-back, who starred in Spurs' Europa League final win over Manchester United, has attracted interest from Diego Simeone. But for now, he remains under contract in north London — and Spurs are standing firm.
Spurs Deny Atletico Agreement
Reports from Argentina claimed Atletico Madrid had agreed a deal worth €55m + €10m in add-ons for the 27-year-old.
But Sky Sports’ Michael Bridge shot those suggestions down quickly:
“Told reports from Argentina media that Spurs have agreed a fee with Atletico Madrid for Cristian Romero are not true.” — Michael Bridge, Sky Sports
Tottenham see Romero as one of their most valuable defensive assets and have no intention of selling unless a huge bid arrives.
Romero's Comments Fuelled Speculation
Romero added fuel to the fire when he admitted in May that he’s always looking to "grow" and develop in new environments.
But sources inside Tottenham say those comments were not intended to force an exit, and talks with Atletico remain informal at best.

Analyst Verdict
Romero's talent is clear — but so is his volatility. Spurs are right to stand firm. Unless Atletico dramatically raise their offer, there’s no logic in selling a player who is just now entering his peak and was voted Player of the Tournament in their Europa League campaign.
What’s Next?
Tottenham are close to finalising a deal for Kota Takai from Kawasaki Frontale and have already completed a permanent move for Mathys Tel.
Whether Romero stays or goes, Thomas Frank is already shaping a new-look back line for 2025/26.
Should Spurs hold firm or cash in if Atletico bid again?
