Roméo Lavia's Belgium situation has been clarified after confusion over his absence from international duty during the March break.

The midfielder was initially listed in Belgium’s U21 squad before being removed, prompting speculation that he had declined a call-up. However, Belgium U21 manager Gill Swerts has now confirmed that the decision was made jointly between Chelsea and the national setup.

With Lavia only recently returning to fitness, the priority appears to have been managing his workload rather than risking further setbacks.

Chelsea and Belgium reach agreement over Roméo Lavia availability

Speaking to Belgian media, Swerts explained that Lavia’s absence was the result of communication between Chelsea and the Belgian federation, rather than a player decision.

“There was a miscommunication. He was on the preliminary selection for the first team, and then there was contact between the federation and Chelsea’s staff.

It was sounded out whether he could get minutes for the U21s, but it was decided by mutual agreement not to do so. But Roméo never refused his selection.” — Gill Swerts, per Sporza

The clarification follows confusion caused by an earlier announcement on Chelsea’s official channels, which was later removed.

Roméo Lavia injury history influencing decision

Lavia’s recent injury record has played a significant role in the decision to keep him at club level. Since joining Chelsea from Southampton in August 2023, the midfielder has struggled with recurring fitness issues.

He has accumulated 1,559 minutes across 37 appearances for the club, with just 503 minutes coming during the current season.

Having followed Chelsea closely in recent weeks, his return to consistent match involvement has only come in March, making careful load management essential at this stage. However, it remains too early to determine whether he will be fully reintegrated into international plans in the near future.

Roméo Lavia Premier League minutes and role

Lavia has featured sparingly in the Premier League this season, reflecting both his injury struggles and gradual return to fitness.

Those numbers underline his limited involvement, although he has recently returned to action and featured in seven matches during March, including a 57-minute appearance against Everton on 22 March 2026.

Belgium fixtures during March international break

While Lavia remains with Chelsea, Belgium’s national sides continue their scheduled fixtures.

  • Netherlands (friendly) — 30 March 2026

Belgium senior team:

What’s next for Lavia and Chelsea?
