Rodri Manchester City future remains stable despite recurring speculation in Spain, with former international Gaizka Mendieta suggesting the midfielder would find it “very difficult” to join Real Madrid and is unlikely to leave the Etihad at all.

Speaking in comments relayed by Spanish outlet Sport, Mendieta addressed ongoing rumours linking the 29 year old with a long-term move back to La Liga. While Real Madrid are often mentioned, the tone of the discussion focused more on Rodri’s emotional attachment to Manchester City than on any active negotiations.

Rodri Manchester City future shaped by attachment

Mendieta indicated that if Rodri were ever to leave, it would likely happen in agreement with City rather than through pressure from outside.

“If he leaves Manchester City, I imagine there would be an agreement with the club,” he said. “There is also a strong connection with Barcelona. Txiki Begiristain was there, and of course Pep Guardiola as well. But in the end, Rodri will decide personally. And I think it would be very difficult for him to sign for Madrid.”

The more telling remark concerned his bond with City.

“Personally, I think it will be difficult for him to leave, especially knowing the attachment Rodri has to the club. It would have to be a limit situation in which he felt practically forced to leave.”

Since arriving from Atlético Madrid in 2019, Rodri has become the tactical cornerstone of Guardiola’s system. Multiple Premier League titles and a Champions League triumph have reinforced his status as one of Europe’s most influential midfielders.

From Manchester City’s perspective, there has been no indication of a willingness to sell, nor has Rodri publicly signalled dissatisfaction.

Guardiola factor and long-term dynamics

Mendieta did suggest that future changes could alter the landscape.

“If there are changes, it may be time for Rodri to reflect on his future,” he added.

In Spain, that comment has been interpreted as a reference to Pep Guardiola’s eventual departure. While there is no immediate suggestion of change at the Etihad, managerial transitions can shift long-term planning for key players.

However, it remains too early to frame this as a live transfer situation. Reports in Spain indicate previous contact between Real Madrid and Rodri did not progress, and there are no confirmed talks underway.

Key Insights

  • Gaizka Mendieta doubts Rodri would join Real Madrid
  • Emotional attachment to Manchester City is seen as decisive
  • Any departure would likely require mutual agreement
  • Guardiola’s future could influence long-term considerations
  • No active negotiations are currently reported

What’s Next

For now, Rodri remains central to Manchester City’s project as they approach the decisive stages of the season. Any shift in his situation would likely depend on structural changes at board or managerial level rather than external pressure. Much will depend on long-term continuity at the Etihad, but there is no indication of imminent movement.

Can Manchester City keep their midfield anchor long term, or will future transitions reopen the La Liga conversation?
