Rob Edwards has warned that Wolves’ mentality will be decisive when they travel to Grimsby Town in the FA Cup fourth round on Sunday.

The Premier League side face League Two opposition at Blundell Park, but Edwards is under no illusions about the challenge ahead. Grimsby are unbeaten in ten matches and have already upset top-flight opposition in cup competition earlier this season.

Rob Edwards stresses Wolves mentality ahead of FA Cup tie

Speaking ahead of the weekend trip, Edwards insisted his squad must approach the tie with full focus.

“It doesn’t feel any different. We're preparing for another game and looking forward to it. It's a brilliant competition that we obviously want to progress in,” he said.

“We’re treating it very normally, and giving it everything we can.”

Wolves progressed professionally against Shrewsbury Town in the previous round, but Edwards made clear that standards cannot drop simply because of the level of opposition.

“It won’t feel normal because the environment will be different. We will be expected to win, and that's no disrespect to them at all,” he added.

“We've spoken a lot about mentality with the players and that will be really, really important going into this game.”

Respect for in-form Grimsby Town

Grimsby’s recent run has caught Edwards’ attention. The League Two side have been difficult to break down and confident in possession.

“They'll try and press us, they'll try and take the ball, that's how they’ll play. They've got a really good way about them, very well coached, and they're doing very well,” Edwards said.

“It will be a difficult game for us again. So, it's down to our mentality, and we’ve got to make sure that we turn up.”

The Wolves head coach has refused to look beyond Sunday, despite acknowledging the appeal of a deeper run in the competition.

Focus remains on immediate task

“It's lovely to dream. The aim is to win the tie, and then we see where we go,” Edwards explained.

“We'd love to progress and go deep into the competition, and we'll certainly try to do that. But we've got a big, big job to do on Sunday first.”

Wolves’ league position adds further urgency. Edwards admitted his squad are fighting on multiple fronts.

“We're in a difficult situation… We're all fighting for something now, fighting for our careers and fighting for the football club.”

He praised the spirit shown in recent performances, even when results have been inconsistent.

“One thing we did get right was some fight, some determination and some spirit, and those things are really, really important.”
