Rio Ngumoha’s rapid rise at Liverpool continued as the teenager delivered a standout display in the club’s FA Cup victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The 17-year-old winger impressed during Liverpool’s 3-1 win at Molineux, a result that secured Arne Slot’s side a place in the quarter-finals of the competition. Despite making only his fourth senior start for the club, Ngumoha played with confidence throughout the evening and repeatedly threatened the Wolves defence.

After the match, Andy Robertson was quick to highlight the youngster’s performance, describing it as one of the most complete displays he has seen from the academy graduate so far.

Andy Robertson praises Rio Ngumoha’s development

Speaking after the game, the Liverpool defender spoke warmly about the teenager’s mentality and willingness to learn.

According to Robertson, Ngumoha has impressed not only with his ability but also with the way he approaches training alongside another highly rated youngster, Trey Nyoni.

“He’s a great kid. He wants to listen and to learn. Him and Trey have been with us every single day and they are both special players, but they are also special people in terms of wanting to learn and improve.” — Andy Robertson

Robertson also revealed he had spoken with Ngumoha before kick-off about improving his decision-making in attacking situations.

“I said to Rio before the game that I wanted him to focus on his decision-making because at times he can try to take on the whole team. His decision-making tonight was unbelievable. He knew when to go one-vs-one, when to go down the line or cut inside.” — Andy Robertson

Based on recent matches Liverpool have played, Ngumoha’s composure in possession and ability to choose the right moment to attack stood out throughout the contest.

Liverpool secure FA Cup quarter-final place

Liverpool ultimately progressed with a comfortable 3-1 victory at Molineux.

Robertson himself opened the scoring with a powerful strike before assisting Mohamed Salah for the visitors’ second goal shortly afterwards. Curtis Jones later added Liverpool’s third to secure the result, while Hwang Hee-Chan pulled back a late consolation for Wolves during stoppage time.

Reflecting on his goal after the match, Robertson admitted it was a rare moment of precision in front of goal.

“Most of them in my Liverpool career have probably gone over the bar, so I just got it out of my feet and thankfully I knew it was in as soon as I hit it.” — Andy Robertson

The Scotland international also emphasised the importance of Liverpool’s quick second goal in maintaining control of the tie.

Young talents emerging under Arne Slot

Having followed Liverpool closely this season, one of the more notable trends has been the increasing involvement of academy players within Arne Slot’s squad rotation.

Ngumoha and Nyoni have both spent significant time training with the senior team, gaining experience alongside established first-team players. Their development has provided Liverpool with additional attacking options during domestic cup competitions.

However, it remains too early to draw firm conclusions about how quickly these players will transition into regular Premier League starters.
