Fulham have been urged to approach their pursuit of PSV Eindhoven striker Ricardo Pepi with caution, as questions remain over how well the American forward would adapt to the Premier League.

Marco Silva’s side have monitored Pepi for several months as they assess options to strengthen their attacking line. Fulham explored a potential move last summer and revived their interest again during the January transfer window, though PSV ultimately rejected their late approach.

Reports now suggest negotiations could restart ahead of the summer window, with speculation growing that a transfer could eventually materialise.

Fulham interest in Ricardo Pepi explained

Former PSV striker René Viscaal understands why Fulham are attracted to Pepi’s profile, particularly his instinctive movement inside the penalty area.

“What Pepi does is very difficult to train. He has the gift that real strikers need. Getting into position in exactly the right way in or around the penalty area is something you naturally have to possess.” — René Viscaal

Pepi’s positioning and finishing ability have made him one of the more interesting young strikers in the Eredivisie. Those attributes have helped him attract interest from several clubs across Europe, including teams in the Premier League.

However, Viscaal believes the step up from Dutch football to England’s top division should not be underestimated.

Premier League adaptation concerns raised

While praising the striker’s natural scoring instincts, Viscaal warned that the Premier League presents a very different challenge compared with the Eredivisie.

“In the Netherlands, the game is played quite openly, and he can benefit from that. In England, you have to deal with a completely different intensity, and defenders are physically much stronger.” — René Viscaal

The former forward suggested Pepi’s ability to cope with that physical and tactical shift remains uncertain.

“Whether he can handle that remains to be seen.” — René Viscaal

Ricardo Pepi’s past European experience

Pepi’s earlier spell with German side Augsburg also serves as a reminder of how difficult adaptation to European football can be for young players arriving from different leagues.

Viscaal believes that period should not be used to judge the striker too harshly, noting that Pepi was still adjusting to the European game at the time.

"You can’t judge him based on his time at Augsburg. He was younger and needed time to adjust to European football."

From the perspective of Fulham’s recruitment strategy, the club may represent a more gradual step for Pepi compared with joining one of Europe’s elite sides immediately.
