Real Madrid have placed Manchester City star Rodri at the top of their midfield wishlist — but a move this summer appears unlikely, according to reports in Spain.
The Spanish giants are in the market for a new midfield anchor, and Rodri has emerged as the priority target. As reported by AS, Madrid believe the 29-year-old Spain international is the most attainable of their options, even if a deal may take time.
Sources suggest Los Blancos would be willing to pay €100 million, particularly if they offload Rodrygo, but City are in no rush to sell. Rodri’s contract runs until 2027, and no extension has been signed yet — which Real Madrid see as an opportunity.
Why Rodri Is Madrid’s Ideal Midfield Target
After losing Toni Kroos and planning long-term beyond Luka Modrić, Madrid are building a new-generation midfield. Rodri offers elite experience, leadership, and tactical intelligence — all traits Xabi Alonso wants at the base of his evolving team.
“He’s the complete No 6 — tempo-setter, press-resistant, and proven at the highest level,” a Real Madrid analyst told AS. — Diario AS
Madrid view Rodri as a safer long-term bet than younger targets, due to his consistent performances under Pep Guardiola and his deep familiarity with La Liga football.
Injury Concern Still Lingers
One major factor holding back an immediate bid is Rodri’s recent knee injury, which sidelined him for nearly seven months last season. He returned only in May, featuring in four matches during the Club World Cup.
Real Madrid reportedly want to monitor his fitness throughout the 2025/26 season before pushing ahead with a full-scale move in 2026 — unless contract talks with City collapse earlier.
Rodri’s 2024/25 Stats
Stat (2024/25) | Rodri | Eduardo Camavinga |
---|---|---|
Appearances | 12 | 46 |
Goals | 1 | 3 |
Pass Accuracy (%) | 91.4% | 89.2% |
Interceptions per game | 1.5 | 1.7 |
Analyst Verdict: Long Game for Madrid, But City Control the Clock
Madrid’s interest is serious and well-founded — but they are playing the long game. Rodri is under contract until 2027, and unless he refuses to extend or shows signs of slowing down, City hold all the cards.
The situation mirrors Madrid’s approach with Jude Bellingham and Aurelien Tchouaméni — identifying a target early and moving decisively when the timing is right.
Key Takeaways
- Rodri is Real Madrid’s “next big goal” in midfield, per AS
- Madrid would pay €100m if the opportunity arose — but not this summer
- Rodri's Man City contract runs until 2027 with no extension yet signed
- Madrid want to assess his form and fitness after a serious knee injury
- 2026 now viewed as the likelier window for a move
What’s Next for Rodri?
Contract talks at Manchester City will be key. If the Spaniard signs an extension this season, Madrid may abandon pursuit. But if there's no agreement by summer 2026, Los Blancos are expected to move decisively — especially if funds are raised from player sales.
Real Madrid’s strategy is clear: monitor, wait, and strike — just as they’ve done with midfield targets before.
Should Manchester City cash in on Rodri next summer — or do everything to secure him with a new deal?

Best CDM in the world. When he plays City wins, simple as that. But, he has been unlucky with the injury's. If he doesn't sign a new contract he'll def. be sold in 2026!
