Rayan Cherki to Man City 2025 is one of the most intriguing deals of the Premier League summer window. With Kevin De Bruyne moving on, Pep Guardiola has turned to Lyon’s playmaker, who arrives at the Etihad for just £29.5 million — less than a third of what Bayer Leverkusen would have demanded for Florian Wirtz.

The 21-year-old registered 20 assists for Lyon last season and ranked among the top three creators across Europe’s big five leagues. But despite his raw talent and flair, Cherki’s consistency and attitude have raised questions. City’s decision to sign him over more proven names highlights both their belief in his upside — and their willingness to take a calculated risk.

What the Cherki Transfer Really Means

Rayan Cherki to Man City 2025 sees Guardiola gamble on raw talent over Premier League readiness. With De Bruyne gone and Wirtz out of reach, City are backing flair over familiarity.

Why Man City Chose Cherki Over Wirtz

Manchester City had long admired Florian Wirtz as the ideal heir to De Bruyne, but a fee nearing £90m proved a dealbreaker. Instead, they moved for Cherki — a player who produced similar creative numbers in Ligue 1 but was available for £29.5m due to Lyon’s financial problems and his contract running down.

Cherki averaged 2.8 key passes per game and created 92 chances in all competitions — outperforming many elite midfielders despite playing in a less dominant side.

Lyon’s Loss Feels Bigger Than the Fee

Lyon have accepted reality this summer. Financial restrictions, a looming contract expiry, and the pressure to sell meant they had no choice but to accept Manchester City’s offer. But Cherki’s 20 assists and match-winning creativity will be near-impossible to replace. He leaves as one of Ligue 1’s standout talents, even if questions remain about his mentality.

Can Cherki Really Succeed at the Etihad?

Talent has never been the issue for Cherki — discipline and application have. Pep Guardiola is known for demanding the best from his midfielders, and while he may nurture the Frenchman into a star, he’ll also have little patience if the attitude slips.

Cherki will have to compete with Phil Foden, Oscar Bobb, and Mateo Kovacic for minutes — and may be used sparingly early on. But this is a long-term investment as much as an immediate fix.

Cherki vs Wirtz, 2024/25 Season

Stat Rayan Cherki Florian Wirtz
Assists 20 22
Key Passes (per 90) 2.8 2.9
Games Played 39 52
Contract Expiry 2025 2027
Estimated Value £29.5m £90m+

Key Bullet Callouts

  • Rayan Cherki to Man City 2025 completed for £29.5m
  • Lyon forced to sell due to financial pressures
  • Guardiola sees Cherki as creative successor to De Bruyne
  • Only Fernandes and Raphinha created more chances in Europe
  • Big expectations but question marks remain around consistency

What’s Next for Cherki at City?

Cherki is expected to join up with Manchester City for pre-season in July. He’ll likely feature in the club’s international friendlies in the US and could debut in the Community Shield. With the Club World Cup on the horizon, Guardiola may use those fixtures to give the Frenchman a stage to impress early.

Is Cherki the real De Bruyne successor — or another Premier League flop in waiting?

City bought 3 players instead of 1 this summer. They had to actually, not only Kvin had to be replaced but their wingers were bad this season.
