Randal Kolo Muani’s slow start to life at Tottenham Hotspur is beginning to raise concern in France, with Le Parisien journalist Harold Marchetti warning that the striker’s fragile form could jeopardise his chances of making Didier Deschamps’ 2026 World Cup squad.

The 26-year-old forward joined Spurs on loan from Paris Saint-Germain on September 1, after an unsuccessful spell in Ligue 1 and a failed permanent return to Juventus, where he had impressed on loan during the previous campaign.

Since arriving in North London, Kolo Muani’s time at Tottenham has been disrupted by injuries and inconsistency, leaving him struggling to secure a regular starting place under Thomas Frank.

“His status remains fragile” – Marchetti on Kolo Muani’s France future

Speaking to Le Parisien, Marchetti assessed the forward’s uncertain situation at club level, suggesting that it could have long-term consequences for his international career.

“Not indispensable, but useful! Les Bleus’ top scorer in 2024, he has often stepped up when it mattered most,” Marchetti said.

“When he’s on form, he brings that extra bit of attacking spark that is so valuable.
But his difficult spell at PSG and his competition at Tottenham, particularly with Richarlison, show that his status remains fragile.”

The journalist added that while Deschamps values Kolo Muani’s ability to change games from the bench, the player’s constant battle for form and fitness is preventing him from solidifying a permanent role with the national team.

“It’s precisely this aspect of being a ‘player who has to prove his worth in every match’ that makes him a valuable asset,” Marchetti continued. “He’s capable of breaking the deadlock and changing a match in a matter of moments. In short, Les Bleus can easily do without him. When he is there and confident, he’s a real asset.”

Stop-start Tottenham spell

Kolo Muani’s stint at Tottenham has been far from smooth. He suffered an injury shortly after his debut in September, ruling him out for more than a month and causing him to miss October’s international window.

He made his return in early November but sustained another setback during Spurs’ 2–2 draw with Manchester United, forcing him to withdraw from France’s most recent squad.
The striker’s rhythm has been further disrupted by strong competition within Thomas Frank’s squad, where Richarlison and Wilson Odobert are ahead of him in the pecking order.

“A player who must prove himself every match”

Despite these challenges, Marchetti believes Kolo Muani’s resilience and ability to make an impact off the bench could still earn him a spot at the World Cup — provided he can regain full fitness and consistency before next summer.

“For a team that likes to keep its options open, a striker capable of surprising opponents is always an asset,” Marchetti concluded. “I wouldn’t be surprised to see him on the list next May.”

Our View: A defining few months ahead

In our view, Kolo Muani’s Spurs spell has not gone to plan — but the next few months could still be decisive. His technical quality, versatility, and pace make him a valuable tactical weapon, but without rhythm and regular minutes, it will be hard to convince Deschamps he deserves a place in France’s World Cup squad.

If he can stay fit and rediscover the confidence that made him France’s top scorer in 2024, there’s still time for redemption. Otherwise, his “fragile status” could turn into something more permanent.
