Raheem Sterling is open to joining Fulham in the January transfer window after Chelsea rejected a loan approach from West Ham United, with the winger eager to end his isolation from first-team football at Stamford Bridge.
FootballPlace understands Sterling is actively seeking a move this month after being frozen out of Chelsea’s senior setup and training alone at Cobham. With his options narrowing, Fulham have emerged as a realistic and appealing destination should they formalise their interest.
Sterling frozen out as Chelsea reject West Ham loan
West Ham recently contacted Chelsea to explore the possibility of taking Sterling on loan for the second half of the season. However, the approach was quickly dismissed.
Chelsea’s position remains firm: the club want a permanent sale, or at minimum a loan deal that includes an unconditional obligation to buy. Sterling is aligned with that stance and is unwilling to accept a short-term loan without clarity over his long-term future. As a result, West Ham’s proposal was rejected by all parties.
Sterling, alongside Axel Disasi, is now one of the final two players left in Chelsea’s so-called “bomb squad”, with both players desperate to secure exits before the window closes.
Fulham appeal grows for Sterling
Fulham are viewed as a strong fit for Sterling, particularly given his desire to remain in London. That preference was clear during the summer, when he attracted interest from Fulham, West Ham and Crystal Palace, and it has not changed six months on.
From Sterling’s perspective, Fulham offer the chance to reset his career in a stable Premier League environment while avoiding upheaval off the pitch. The winger is understood to be leaning towards a move to Craven Cottage if the club decide to push forward and meet Chelsea’s conditions.
Career at a crossroads
Sterling has not played a single minute of competitive football this season, a remarkable fall for a player who was once a regular starter at the highest level. His last meaningful run of games came during a loan spell at Arsenal in the second half of last season, where he scored once in 28 appearances.
Now 31, Sterling is acutely aware that another half-season without football would severely damage his prospects, making a January exit a priority rather than a preference.
Chelsea stance unchanged
Chelsea remain focused on trimming their squad and recouping value where possible. Sterling joined the club from Manchester City in July 2022 for £47.5 million on a five-year contract, but he no longer features in the club’s plans.
Unless Chelsea soften their demands, only clubs willing to commit to a permanent deal — or a loan with a guaranteed purchase — are likely to progress talks.
Key insights
- Raheem Sterling wants to leave Chelsea in January after being frozen out
- West Ham’s loan approach was rejected by Chelsea and the player
- Fulham are viewed as Sterling’s preferred option if they move forward
- Chelsea want a permanent deal or a loan with obligation to buy
What’s next
Fulham must decide whether to formalise their interest and meet Chelsea’s terms if they want to move ahead. With Sterling pushing for clarity and Chelsea keen to offload him, talks could accelerate quickly if the Cottagers act. Otherwise, Sterling may be forced to look further afield — or risk another month on the sidelines.
Would Raheem Sterling be a smart signing for Fulham — or does his recent lack of football make the risk too great?

He’s earning a sh*t load of money with just doing nothing 😂. He would have more playing time going to West Ham instead of Fulham, anyways Chelsea won’t care as long as he’s of the books for good.
