Feyenoord have secured the signing of Raheem Sterling on a deal until the end of the season, with the club expecting the 82-cap England international in Rotterdam on Friday.

The winger, previously of Liverpool, Manchester City, Arsenal and Chelsea, became a free agent last month, opening the door for Feyenoord to move despite the transfer window having closed.

Raheem Sterling signs for Feyenoord on free transfer

Sterling’s availability attracted interest from multiple European clubs, but he has opted for a move to De Kuip after extensive discussions with head coach Robin van Persie and general director Dennis te Kloese.

“Through my free-agent status I had, for the first time in a long while, the opportunity to carefully consider the next step in my career,” Sterling said in a club statement.

“I spoke with several clubs and head coaches to understand the role they had in mind for me and to be certain that I could truly add value.

“After very thorough talks with Dennis and with Robin, I am convinced Feyenoord is the place where I will be happy and a valuable member of the squad. Playing abroad is a completely new challenge for me, and one I am happy to embrace.”

Van Persie described the signing as a major boost.

“It is fantastic that after the transfer window closed we were still able to bring in a player of Raheem’s calibre,” he said. “His football CV speaks for itself. His qualities can absolutely make the difference in a match, and I am convinced he will help us achieve our objectives in the second half of the season.”

A decorated career arrives in Rotterdam

Sterling began his career in London after moving from Jamaica to the United Kingdom at the age of five. He was developed at Queens Park Rangers before breaking through at Liverpool as a teenager.

A move to Manchester City in 2015 elevated him to elite status. He won four Premier League titles and multiple domestic honours, scoring over 200 goals across club and international football. In 2021, he was appointed Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) for his work promoting equality and combating discrimination in sport.

His arrival represents one of the most high-profile mid-season additions in Feyenoord’s recent history.
