Chelsea-bound winger Quenda has once again underlined why the Premier League giants were so keen to secure his signature, with Portuguese press hailing his latest Champions League performance as “spectacular.” The 18-year-old, still on loan at Sporting for the 2025/26 campaign, was described as producing a “Messi-esque” solo goal in a 4-1 victory over Kairat, according to leading daily A Bola.

The youngster’s display drew special attention from veteran columnist José Manuel Delgado, who noted Quenda’s quiet first half before a second-half explosion of creativity. Delgado argued that the winger “signed the greatest spectacle of the night at Alvalade” after assisting Allison Santos before embarking on a dazzling run to score Sporting’s fourth.

Chelsea sanctioned Quenda’s immediate return to Sporting following his transfer agreement, allowing him valuable minutes in Portugal’s first team. With the London club facing a congested calendar across the Premier League and Champions League, they are hoping the teenager’s development will continue apace in Lisbon. Could he be the surprise solution to Chelsea’s long-term wide attacking options?

The hype surrounding Quenda comes at a time when Chelsea are managing their transition under new leadership and still searching for consistent creativity in the final third. While fans are excited by Cole Palmer’s growth, the addition of another technically gifted winger next summer could be decisive in their tactical evolution.

Why Quenda’s Sporting form excites Chelsea

Portuguese media have long celebrated Sporting’s ability to nurture wingers, from Luís Figo to Cristiano Ronaldo. Quenda, still just 18, now finds himself being mentioned in the same breath after his fearless display.

His goal against Kairat highlighted his combination of pace, balance, and close control. Picking up the ball in midfield, he slalomed past defenders before slotting home — a move Delgado likened to Lionel Messi in his prime.

“Quenda pulled out of the hat all the rabbits he hadn’t already used throughout the match, produced a ‘Messi-esque’ move, slalomed past every opponent in his way, and put the ball in the back of the net.” — José Manuel Delgado, A Bola

Such flair has not gone unnoticed at Stamford Bridge, where coaches are said to be monitoring his progress closely.

Though Quenda is yet to score in league play this season, his three assists in just 208 minutes show a player already influencing matches despite limited starting opportunities. With an average of 1.6 key passes per game, he is proving capable of unlocking defences even without consistent 90-minute runouts.

Analyst verdict: why Chelsea fans should be optimistic

FootballPlace analyst John William believes Chelsea have landed one of Europe’s most exciting young wingers:

“Quenda’s ceiling is immense. What stands out is not just his technical flair but his composure in big Champions League moments. Chelsea have often struggled against deep defensive blocks; a player who can carry the ball through traffic and create from nothing is exactly what they need. The question will be whether Enzo Maresca, trusts him immediately or eases him in gradually.”

William also highlighted the mental side of Quenda’s adaptation: “He has already faced media scrutiny in Lisbon, which will prepare him for life in London. The raw numbers are good, but the eye test — that willingness to take risks and make something happen — is what Chelsea supporters should be most excited about.”

Key insights

  • Quenda scored a sensational ‘Messi-esque’ solo goal in Sporting’s 4-1 Champions League win over Kairat.
  • Portuguese media praised him as the standout performer on the night.
  • The 18-year-old is set to join Chelsea in summer 2026 after staying at Sporting this season.
  • He has 5 appearances, 3 assists, and 208 minutes played so far in the 2025/26 campaign.
  • Chelsea coaches are monitoring his progress as they seek long-term wide attacking solutions.

What’s next for Chelsea and Quenda?

With Chelsea balancing multiple competitions, the pressure on their current wingers will only increase. Should injuries hit in the second half of the season, the case for recalling Quenda early might even be raised, though contractual clauses make that unlikely.

Sporting, meanwhile, will hope to continue benefiting from his talent in domestic and European fixtures. Their next Champions League clash in early October could provide another platform for Quenda to shine. If his form continues, Chelsea fans may already be picturing him lining up at Stamford Bridge next autumn.

👉 Should Chelsea give Quenda a chance in their first team straight away — or protect his development with another loan spell?

We already have Estevao, Neto and from next season Quenda - I think Neto will be sold in the summer. If this guy keeps continuing to improve during this season. Our attackers looks very bright, but need to shift focus on our CB's..
